One of two men struck late last night by a Metro bus at Palm on Santa Monica Boulevard succumbed to his injuries this morning – the other man remains in critical condition at Cedars-Sinai Hospital.
The two men were struck on the 8800 block of Santa Monica Boulevard, in front of the Metro bus depot, by a bus travelling eastbound in the south lane near or in an unmarked crosswalk at 11:40 pm, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Transit Services Bureau Sgt. Andrew Bedogne.
The elder victim, age 81, died of his injuries soon after arriving at the hospital.
The other man, age 50, remains in critical condition today.
The deceased man’s identity is being withheld pending notification of kin.
NBC-LA reports that Lt. Sergio Aloma told them preliminary investigation suggested speed was not a factor; one photographer at the scene reported a broken window on the bus.
However, investigators are uncertain whether or not the break occurred prior to the accident.
Also unclear is whether or not the men were in the crosswalk.
The stretch of roadway was closed for about an hour for investigators and has since reopened.
The investigation by Los Angeles County Sheriff’s detectives continues.
