No one has ever gotten in real trouble for running around West Hollywood’s in their underwear; in fact, the practice is encouraged on Saturday nights in Boystown.
However, come February 9, the Creative City will see scores, it not hundreds, of people trotting around town in their bloomers, boxers, bras, panties and tidy-whities - for charity.
A one-mile running event called The Cupid’s Undie Run raises money for the Children’s Tumor Foundation.
The twist is that participants dress (shouldn’t that be undress?) only in their underwear and sprint around West Hollywood Park.
Awards will be presented to the highest fundraisers.
Last year the run raised more than $400,000 nationwide and this year the organizers hope to raise $1 million.
The City of West Hollywood is a co-sponsor of the event.
Runners will start the day at noon at The Abbey, 692 N. Robertson Boulevard, where the bar will be open to participants over 21 years of age. (Some people apparently need to lower their inhibitions before running nearly naked).
The run will commence at 2 p.m. at West Hollywood Park, 647 N. San Vicente Boulevard, and the awards ceremony will take place at 3 p.m. back at The Abbey.
Fundraising incentives include official Cupid’s Undie Run undies and bathrobes, and an engraved iPod Nano.
The Children’s Tumor Foundation is the world’s largest non-government organization dedicated to ending Neurofibromatosis (NF), a genetic disorder that causes tumors to grow on nerves throughout the body causing blindness, deafness, learning disabilities and severe chronic pain.
Currently, there is no cure for NF, and few treatment options.
Registration for the event is $40.
