Forty days after kicking off a Signature Drive to place a Term Limits Initiative on the West Hollywood ballot, Term Limits for West Hollywood submitted over four thousand signatures to the City Clerk.
The group had hoped to collect 3,500 to allow for disallowed signatures. They needed 2344 valid signatures to place the measure on the city’s municipal ballot.
Initiative proponents Elyse Eisenberg, Sheila Lightfoot and Scott Schmidt, along with nearly 4000 petition-signers, are asking the City Council to place this question on the ballot during the next municipal election:
“Shall an ordinance be adopted providing that no person shall serve more than a total of three (3) terms as a member of the West Hollywood City Council, whether served consecutively or non-consecutively, with any portion of a term, whether elected or appointed, counting as a full term?”
Of the 4000-plus signatures submitted, 3452 were verified as being from West Hollywood residents.
“Nearly 4000 people believe the time is right to have term limits for the West Hollywood City Council,” said Ms. Lightfoot. “Our volunteers did the heavy lifting to bring their friends, neighbors and community together to put this issue before the voters.”
In addition to collecting more than 4,000 signatures, Term Limits for West Hollywood also registered more than 400 voters in what they are calling one of the largest voter-registration efforts the city has ever seen.
“We have been energized by the enthusiasm in the community for this issue,” said Schmidt. “The people of West Hollywood are ready for change; they are ready for fresh, new leadership.”
The Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder now had 30 working days to count the signatures. If 67.9% of the signatures submitted are from registered voters, the initiative will qualify for the ballot.
Initially, the Registrar-Recorder will conduct a random sample of 500 signatures. If 74.70% of the signatures selected for a random sample are valid, the initiative will qualify without requiring a full count.
Once the signatures are verified, the West Hollywood City Council may either adopt the ordinance as proposed or submit the question to the voters at their next municipal election.
To qualify for the March 2013 ballot, the Council must place the measure on the ballot before December 7, 2012.
