WEHOville publisher launches site with a slam of the city over the Tom of Finland Erotic Art Fair, saying the city's waiving fees for the event, "risks damaging West Hollywood’s reputation as a city of sophistication and culture."
[UPDATED: Not long after this piece went up, journalist and media critic Richard Horgan sounded off about WEHOville.com's inauspicious start as the "only truly local and professional" news site in WeHo.]
West Hollywood’s newest publisher Henry Scott launched his news web site WEHOville.com on Friday night.
The site, which promises to be the definitive and “only truly local and professional news and information” site about West Hollywood launched with a set of news features.
As already pointed out on these pages, the publisher with less than a year in town launched his “only truly local” site focusing on WeHo staffed exclusively by non-WeHo residents.
The first iteration of the site, designed to “capture the look and feel of West Hollywood… its style as well as its eccentricity,” according to a Facebook posting, is bare bones, apparently generated from a template.
It has the look and feel of other news site, although with more negative space than most.
A glance through their offerings finds features on four (mostly longtime) community political activists who are part of the Term Limits push, a broad overview of the city’s historic cultural landmarks, and a catch up feature on the long embattled Crescent Heights United Methodist Church’s Pastor Scott Imler (derisively entitled “The Church vs. the Pothead Pastor”).
The site has a few news items, but contains no local breaking news despite its promise to finally bring “real news” to WeHo.
It does cover some news from the past week or so, including Tuesday’s news about the decision by the US Supreme Court to not yet hear the Prop 8 appeal, but today remains silent about the October 1 news on Prop 8.
In a city known for its outsized political and social impact, uniqueness and its pride in that difference from others, theWEHOville.com Facebook page say its focus will be on the city’s “eccentricities” and “wackiness.”
One resident, Mia Johnson, took issue with that characterization in a Letter to the WeHo News Editor.
“So you’re going to provide the only truly local and professional coverage of West Hollywood’s eccentricities and its wackiness, huh? How many people are you insulting there?” she asked.
She then supplied the answer. “Oh, I’d say about 35,000. West Hollywood residents don’t see ourselves as ‘wacky’ or ‘eccentric.’ We see ourselves as genuine and real. We came here to WeHo because we didn’t fit elsewhere, because people, institutions and society everywhere else made us feel like outsiders in our own communities.”
Another letter writer, Realtor Robert Leighton and member of the California Association of Realtors board of directors, had this to say about it.
“What on earth made this guy choose such a stupid name for a publication? It is so close to Whoville from the Grinch That Stole Christmas,” he wrote.
Perhaps to emphasize Mr. Scott's appreciation of his new home’s eccentricity and wackiness, he wrote an article condemning the City Council for waiving fees for the Tom of Finland’s Erotic Art Fair taking place this weekend, saying that to do so “risks rending the fragile fabric of tolerance that binds the various communities.”
Additionally, referring to an independent event producer’s throwing of a “Play Party” at a Los Angeles venue, he contends that the city’s fee waiver (which the city gives every event that promises to bring people and money into the city) of the Erotic Art Fair “risks damaging West Hollywood’s reputation as a city of sophistication and culture.”
When in early 2011 the Arts Commission expressed concerns about the TOF Erotic Art Fairand declined to sponsor it (the City Council unanimously voted to sponsor the event), West Hollywood gay rights icon, Ivy Bottini, co-chair of the Lesbian and Gay Advisory Board (LGAB), another co-sponsor of the event and an artist herself, called the commissioners' action "the underbelly of being heterosexual," that displayed the sometimes unexamined prejudices all people carry with them.
Back then, all and sundry took the incident as a teachable moment to investigate their unexamined prejudices or, in the case of gay males who expressed discomfort with the event, unexamined self-loathing.
Still, the most telling reporting on Mr. Scott and his new publication came before the first issue came out.
Media watcher Richard Horgan published a pair of pieces the week before last on WEHOville.com that showed a slice of the newcomer's character.
When Mr. Horgan ran an item announcing WEHOville.com’s coming launch and relating WeHo News founder Ryan Gierach’s experience with Mr. Scott, the new publisher denied ever offering to buy this publication.
Not long after WEHOville.com's first issue went up, Richard Horgan sounded off about WEHOville.com's entry into WeHo as the "only truly local and professional" news site in WeHo.
He wrote, "Not exactly an auspicious start."
As one Facebook commenter said on the WEHOville.com page, “We wait with baited (sic) breath,” to see how things develop, especially now that West Hollywood Patch, part of the 850-site AOL Patch chain, has decided to give up the news business to focus on being a community bulletin board and chat room.
