The GOP vice-presidential nominee, Paul Ryan, told so many fibs his fibula coverings ought to have caught fire.

HAAS-TA LA VISTA: Life’s unfair for seniors
10/01/2012
By WeHo News staff, West Hollywood, California

Sometimes it is difficult to understand how life treats people you know, with the understanding you are really helpless to do anything to help.

Werner Haas is a West Hollywood writer whose latest novel is named "Wasps."

I have a friend- not a close friend, actually more of a long-time acquaintance. He is now in his mid-eighties and relatively healthy.

Well, sometimes he forgets things, but definitely does not have Alzheimer’s.

I met him when he was a self-employed CPA living in New Jersey. He did my taxes for years, even when he moved to Delaware and got a job with some accounting firm.

We stayed in touch, even when I moved to LA.

Some years ago, his company went under and what he expected to receive in pension and 401K pretty much petered out. He moved to LA’s Westside and lived with his divorced daughter in a small apartment.

He didn’t want to be “retired” but at his age, no one would hire him when even younger people went begging for jobs.

Things turned grim when his daughter, a mid-level bank executive, lost her job. There was Unemployment, and then that ended. He and I talked on occasion, even used to meet for lunch.

He called me the other day in a rage I had never heard him to be like. Some friends had suggested that he apply for food stamps. There was every reason the state or federal government would be supportive.

He told me his sad tale. He swallowed his pride, called for an appointment and went to an office on West Pico. Even though he had an appointment, he ended up in a crowded waiting room for nearly an hour before a Latina “Counselor” called him to her cubicle office.

Seniors often have a difficult time accessing social services, one reason West Hollywood spends over $3 million a year on services.

He told me he was the only Caucasian there, many others were minorities, mostly women who had brought their children with them.

He told me that he filled out almost a couple of dozen documents, including his financials, which basically meant his monthly Social Security income. He seemed to have nothing else coming in regularly. He had no license to do accountant work in California, assuming one needed one.

What he told me stunned me: Social Services includes the amount deducted for Medicare as “income” and deducts only about two-thirds of that as medical expenses.

He told me his counselor, who spoke such an accented English he had to ask her to repeat her questions and comments a number of times, shook her head finally and explained he would not get anywhere near the top amount but he would get a detailed letter and amount shortly.

The phone call to me from him in a rage followed his receipt of the letter offering him a monthly food stamp allotment of fourteen dollars.

Since all this is second-hand information, I can only share his rage second-hand.

But as a senior citizen myself (God! How I hate that PC term) I can only commiserate with my friend and bemoan the fact that as we get older and often unable to meet all our expenses things happen that demean us.

This occurrence brings sharply to mind that this richest country in the world (excepting all those Arab oil-Emirates) too many of us find it necessary to look to the government for help and the government with its mind-set bureaucrats is not always able or willing to provide that needed help.

It is also disturbing that right-wing politicians and their followers are insisting on less government, less Medicare and Medicaid, the loudest being wealthy enough to support thousands of the impoverished.

Who or who doesn’t pay taxes is far less important than who or who does not have the right and the assistance to survive.

Werner Haas is a West Hollywood writer whose latest novel is named "Wasps." Summary: Long Island is no longer a place for complacent suburbanites. It is now a festering ground for anti-social activity by bored or power-hungry teens.

The Wasps is a story of such a neo-Nazi gang made up of otherwise "ordinary" middle-class young people.
