Missing for decades, a 1949 vintage fire engine that once operated out of West Hollywood Fire Station 7 has been located and returned home.
According to Bellflower LACOFD Captain Joe Woyjeck, vice president of the nonprofit Los Angeles County Fire Museum, “Our organization just tracked down, purchased and took possession of a 1949 General Pacific fire engine.”
The engine was assigned to WeHo in 1949 and operated here for decades afterward, but when replaced by newer models in the 1970s, went on to a murky retirement.
The LA County Fire Museum located it in Napa, California, in a barn.
Now the engine sits in its new home in Bellflower at the museum awaiting refurbishment.
Captain Woyjeck tells WeHo News, “This fire engine was assigned to West Hollywood. It needs to be restored but it is a complete fire engine with a great history.”
A true avocationalist and restorationist, Capt. Woyjeck said, “It is now resting comfortably surrounded by other old County apparatus at the County of Los Angeles Fire Museum in the city of Bellflower.
"We are excited that we were able to acquire this piece of Los Angeles County fire department and West Hollywood's history.
“We know very little about this fire engine and are presently researching its history. Some of the things we will be looking for are when exactly this truck was in service, when it was removed from service and where it has been for the last 70 plus years," he said.
The fellows down at the museum were able to confirm through the fire engines identification numbers, that it is West Hollywood fire engine 7, but “other than that the history of this iconic fire engine is very vague,” he said.
He hoped that someone in the West Hollywood community with a memory reaching back that far might be able to help him flesh out the history of the engine that battled fire after fire in the West Hollywood area.
He also said that, “In the near future the nonprofit Los Angeles County Fire museum will start the restoration that is expected to cost between $50,000 and $70,000.”
In an appeal for funds, he noted that, “The County of Los Angeles Fire Museum is a nonprofit 501 c 3 organization and no tax payer money is used in our restorations. The funding for this restoration will come from the private and corporate world.
“If you are interested in making a donation to help with the restoration or you have pictures or information on the history of this great old fire engine please contact me."
It certainly would make a heck of a presentation if refurbished and run down Santa Monica Boulevard for LA Gay Pride Parade, wouldn’t it?
