I admit it: I grew up in a far simpler time, before Internet, Facebook and Youtube.
When you went to the movies in the summer because they were “air cooled.”
When “show business” hid any and all sleaze behind special PR experts who protected names and studios from any public damage.
The public flocked to Spencer Tracy’s movies without realizing his difficult alcoholism.
Even tattletales like Hedda Hopper and Louella Parsons vehemently protected any actors or actresses who were “gay.”
Actors and actresses became “stars” because they performed well and sold tickets and always presented a clean and decent personality.
In my day, stars earned that title. No single picture or screenplay made you a star.
It took time, talent and opportunity.
The public did not know, and probably did not care, about that ubiquitous casting couch.
In my day, there were not that many real “stars.” The word “super star” had not yet been invented.
I don’t even know who dreamed up that title and who was its first possessor.
All I know is that today the word “star” has fallen into a far too frequent usage when it is ill deserved.
For example, looking at a recent AOL headline about a “star’s” dress, it turned out the so-called “star” was Nicole Richie.

What has this Paris Hilton bimbo clone ever done to deserve the award “star”- certainly not gleaned from her Dad, Lionel.
And, whereas once upon a time the Hollywood Walk of Fame really was limited to stars, current and bygone, radio, movies, TV and music; look at the names today: Erik Estrada, for God’s sake; Paula Abdul, James Brolin, Zza Zza Gabor, Adam West, Mamie Van Doren - and on and on.
These people were performers, maybe personalities, but STARS? Nyet!
It seems all that’s required is a horde of dough and a good PR rep.
Of course I will compliment the people who oversee the Walk for denying a place to the Kardashians.
There still is a limit to trash on Hollywood sidewalks.
My point is that we now live at a time where real fame and real achievement is overshadowed by titles and awards that are bought or bartered, not really achieved.
That goes for Oscars, Emmys, Golden Globes and Grammys and Tonys as well.
I regret that we’ll never return to a simpler and more meaningful recognition of talent.
People would go to a “Gable picture” or a “Bette Davis film” regardless of what the story line was.
Names alone could sell tickets.
Not even Tom Cruise or Julia Roberts or Meryl Streep’s names can guarantee a profit.
But, please, the ghetto-minded rap stars and pop music shouters of today, from Jay-Z to Beyonce and down- none deserve to be called “super star.”
There simply is no one in show business deserving of that title.
And, don’t tell me “Streisand.”

Werner Haas is a West Hollywood writer whose latest novel is named "Wasps." | Summary: Long Island is no longer a place for complacent suburbanites. It is now a festering ground for anti-social activity by bored or power-hungry teens.
The Wasps is a story of such a neo-Nazi gang made up of otherwise "ordinary" middle-class young people.
