The City of West Hollywood, however, wants to emphasize the importance of voting, so it is participating in National Voter Registration Day tomorrow, Tuesday, September 24.
Before the new online registration law took effect last week, Californians had to take a printed form, sign it, and mail it to an elections office before being counted as registered to vote.
"Today, the Internet replaces the mailbox for thousands of Californians wishing to register to vote,'' California Secretary of State Debra Bowen said in a statement.
The deadline for voter registration for the November 6, 2012 presidential election is October 22.
According to the California Voter Foundation, more than 25 percent of the Golden State’s eligible voters are not registered.
The City of West Hollywood is joining a nationwide effort to celebrate National Voter Registration Day, to make sure no one is left out of the voter registration process.
On Tuesday, September 25, 2012 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., the City will have a voter information and registration table in the lobby at West Hollywood City Hall, 8300 Santa Monica Boulevard.
On National Voter Registration Day, staff will be available to answer questions and assist people to register to vote for the Presidential election, as well as the City’s municipal election on March 5, 2013.
The deadline to vote in this year’s Presidential election is Monday, October 22, 2012.
“The right to vote is one of the basic rights guaranteed by our U.S. Constitution. It is one of our most precious rights, not to mention our civic duty,” said West Hollywood Mayor Jeffrey Prang.
“Every vote counts on election day. So, register, vote and be a part of the dialogue,” Mayor Prang said.
Voter registration forms are available at West Hollywood City Hall, as well as at every City of West Hollywood Advisory Board, Commission and City Council meeting.
“Voting is one of the most important things we can do to make an impact on the issues we care about,” said West Hollywood Mayor Pro Tempore Abbe Land.
“Whether at the local, state or federal level, it is important that we all make our voices heard and voting is one of the most crucial ways to do that. We hope people will take this opportunity to register, or make sure they are registered, so they can have the opportunity to vote in the upcoming elections,” she said.
“Voting is a powerful right, and an important opportunity that we as Americans have for expressing our opinions about fundamental issues in our cities, our states and our Nation,” said West Hollywood Councilmember John D'Amico.
“From the very first moments of our democracy the importance of representation has guided our insistence on liberty. So many have marched for, fought for and died for our liberties and now more than ever, it is vitally important to acknowledge their sacrifices, express our opinions and exercise our right to vote,” Councilmember D'Amico continued.
