Cabaret charges restaurateur is a homophobe

The Peter Mac performances impersonating Judy Garland will no longer occur at the French Marketplace as they have for the past nine months, it was announced yesterday.

In a Facebook posting announcing the move to a new venue entitled “HOMOPHOBIC OR INTOLERANT: YOU DECIDE,” DJ Schaefer, a partner in the venture with Peter Mac, declaimed French Marketplace owners as homophobes and censors to explain their sudden move from the West Hollywood spot to Oil Can Harry’s in the San Fernando Valley.

“On more than one occasion,” charged Mr. Schaefer, “the owners of the property requested that we censor the work that we do. The owners took issue with a fully clothed picture of Peter where his legs were slightly splayed, deeming it ‘too provocative.’” (see the complete press release below)

Furthermore, claims Mr. Schaefer, the owners recently, “stated that they do not want a gay show in the market, nor do they consider themselves to be a gay restaurant.”

Mr. Schaefer told WeHo News that he “had emails from [owner Michael Faze] that support the above [charges].

Michael Faze, who bought the French Marketplace with business partner Marc Ittah last year, said he could not be homophobic and own a neighborhood restaurant in the middle of the gayest city in the country, nor would he have leased the space to a drag show.

According to Mr. Faze, he never wrote the alleged notes and never asked the partners to leave.

He asserts that the show left ("I didn't ask them to leave," he said) due to pressure from the City of West Hollywood, which has long been seeking to bring the “supper club” into compliance with zoning laws.

The space he rented to Mr. Mac and his partner, DJ Schaefer is zoned for retail use.

The fact that they performed with microphones violated city code, and commercial code compliance clamped down on them.

Mr. Faze told WeHo News, “That would have cost $11,000 in consultant and application fees to shepherd through the Planning Commission and then City Council of a new Conditional Use Permit, as well as construction costs to bring the venue up to fire code, because the venue has insufficient emergency exits.”

To make that cash outlay work, the show’s partners demanded a much longer lease, he said.

According to him, the show was in trouble and had been failing for months to bring a crowd of more than "five or six people" - when the show did go on.

"That made me very uncomfortable with extending the lease as far as they wanted," he told WeHo News.

"I couldn’t be sure they would still be operating [for the length of the proposed lease.]”

Mr. Schaefer, who describes himself on his web site as "hemisphericaly (sic) balanced" and claims to have a doctoral degree in Experiential Design, told WeHo News that the permitting situation with the city “doesn’t matter to us.”

Additionally, Mr. Schaefer says he plans to take a public stand on his claims of censorship and homophobia, saying, “I am running for City Council [in 2013].”

As for his views on censorship, they seem to operate in only one direction.

When WeHo News made a comment on his Facebook page he did not like, he blocked us from making further comments, saying, “Of course... why would I get into a public debate with you…?”
