Apparently a new NBC sit-com entitled “The New Normal” about two gay men and a female surrogate (not the most humorous situation I can think of) will not be carried by the NBC affiliate in Salt Lake City.
As if Salt Lake City with its enormous homophobic anti-black population can be considered “normal.”
“Normal” these days might mean a Starbucks on every corner and a 7-11 with a vast array of wines and liquors. Very doubtful in Mormon country.
Normal in Utah is voting for non-intellectuals like Romney and Hatch. The height of Mormon creativity is their Mormon Tabernacle Choir.
I wonder if they perform songs by gay composers such as Schubert, Ned Rorem or Stephen Sondheim.
Normal in today’s society has no meaningful finite definition everyone can agree upon. Even heterosexuals take their clothes off sometime during the day.
Not according to Ira Levin’s estate which imposed a “cease and desist” order on a scheduled performance of “Deathtrap” at the LA Gay & Lesbian Center because an actor showed his bare buttocks.
Even reincarnations of the ground-breaking “Rent” which had full frontal nudity are more or less normal now.
Harry Potter showed his penis on Broadway in “Equus” and no wizards or witches appeared.
The Right-wing, Tea-Party rednecks of our generation would have us believe that awaiting the return of Jesus, marriage only for men and women, hating a black President and anyone with other than white skin or normal eyes is normal.

These are the same people who believe life begins when their cousin buys Viagra.
“Normal” is having medical evidence that forcible rape will secrete some sort of hormonal substance in a woman to prevent pregnancy.
Politics and religion aside, we live in times where there is no “normal.”
In New Orleans, hurricane dangers, in Southern California Earthquake dangers, Tornados in Kansas, drought in Iowa, sharks off Cape Cod, executions galore in Texas, fraud in every bank and brokerage, gang warfare extending from coast to coast means there is no longer a place to feel “normal” in our world.
For those gay, lesbian, transgender or bisexual people who think living in West Hollywood affords them a sense of normal, think again.
This is a village where shopkeepers and bar-owners firmly believe being gay or catering to gays entitles them to raise their prices and lower their services, a village where the greedy and already wealthy building owners who are turning our area into West Condo-wood by circumventing rent control.
Normal here also seems to include the homeless and jobless using our bus shelters and parks as their homes, threatening the peace and stability of others.
Maybe a real “normal” was only a figment of our imaginations.
But for me at least, the good old days were better than today.
Editor’s note: “The New Normal” will be aired in Salt Lake City by a small local station, which announced the coup late last week.
In addition to that, a new normal proceeds when Robert Mapplethorpe’s X Portfolio, a 1978 series that includes pictures of gay sadomasochistic scenarios, opens next month at LACMA and the Getty.
Take that, censors.

Werner Haas is a West Hollywood writer whose latest novel is named "Wasps." | Summary: Long Island is no longer a place for complacent suburbanites. It is now a festering ground for anti-social activity by bored or power-hungry teens.
The Wasps is a story of such a neo-Nazi gang made up of otherwise "ordinary" middle-class young people.
