KCAL 9 reports that a 93-year old West Hollywood woman faces foreclosure and eviction after being sold a bad loan in the wake of her husband’s death.
Because of malevolent financial dealings, local housing activist Suzanne O’Keeffe says Hilda Vinalas of West Hollywood may lose the home she and her husband bought here in WeHo in the 1940s.
Apparently, after Mr. Vinalas died recently, Mrs. Vinalas applied for a loan against the house they had long ago paid for.
The original purchase price was $30,000.
She sought a fixed mortgage for $140,000 from Lehman Brothers to tide her over through her twilight years.
Instead of selling the WeHo senior what she wanted, a loan officer at the lender sold her a mortgage for five times that amount - $750,000 – and to make matters worse, sold her an adjustable rate mortgage.
“They made me sign many papers, and I could’ve signed my death sentence because I didn’t know what I was signing,” Mrs. Vinalas told the TV station.
Adding insult to injury, the money disappeared.
According to, “The money went missing. We’re doing an investigating about where it went.”
“It’s a lot of money. I can’t remember who did it, who took it, nothing,” Mrs. Vinalas said.
Ms. O’Keeffe said the loan was rigged against the West Hollywood homeowner from the get go.
“It was a bad loan. It was an adjustable rate loan. She shouldn’t have gotten it to begin with on her income, and it was the wrong thing to do for an elderly woman.”
As she assists Mrs. Vinalas track down her money to avoid eviction, she found that the loan has since been sold to other financiers – three of them.
Nationstar, the current loan holder, did not answer KCAL 9’s inquiries.
Mrs. Vinalas is determined to stay in her home of 60 years, but also resigned to whatever the future holds for her.
“They would have to take me out by forcing me. I won’t leave by myself, no,” she said, but added, “I will be happy on the street.”
In an example of practical planning, she said, “I already went to practice to be homeless, but I did this for only three days because it got so cool at night.
“I couldn’t stand more.”
