As the Republican Party meets in Tampa to crown Mitt Romney as its Presidential nominee, the spotlight turns to folks like me, a Log Cabin Republican, with the question, “what are you thinking?”

My first thought is, “thank goodness I live in California, so I can vote for whomever I want.”
California is solidly Obama country. Our votes will be counted, but we are and have been for months his on the Electoral College map.
If they weren’t, and California’s Electoral College votes were in play, we’d be looking at a Romney landslide nationally, and our votes wouldn’t matter,
That is actually liberating, because it allows me to vote for the candidate I most agree with on the issues: Gary Johnson.
The former Republican Governor of New Mexico wants to stay out of our pocketbooks and out of our bedrooms. Such ideological consistency is rare and should be rewarded.
And, unlike Barack Obama, who has given lip service to the issue, Johnson actually believes in Marriage Equality as a public policy—not just as something that should be allowed to happen if the State you live in chooses to let it happen.
What am I thinking when I see the Mike Huckabees and Michelle Bachmans of the world take the stage in Tampa?
I’m thinking there’s still work to be done, and someone has got to do it. I’m a Republican because I believe in core values like limited government, personal responsibility and fundamental freedoms.
For me to compromise my beliefs because of my sexual orientation would not be honest, and I believe that you’ve got to be true to yourself.
If the Republican Party is going to change on social issues like marriage equality, it will come from within—and if people like me abandon that struggle, who will be left to fight the forces of intolerance?

Just as was former-West Hollywood city council member Lindsey Horvath, I was excited in 2000 to see George Bush pitch a Big Tent for the Republican Party in Philadelphia.
As an delegate, I felt welcomed and embraced by the Party, and could point to areas of change.
George Bush’s tax policies and entitlement reforms brought about equity for gay and lesbian couples—which, while short of equal rights, was a move in the right direction.
Four years later, in New York, I proudly wore an “I (love) Dick” tee shirt to hear the Vice President speak at the Republican National Convention, because for the first time, our country had a major party nominee who supported the rights of same-sex couples to marry.
But as I look to Mitt Romney, our Party’s nominee, I cannot help but wonder “what is he thinking?”
In 2007, Log Cabin ran an ad in Iowa, highlighting Mitt Romney’s positions on issues like gay rights, abortion and gun control in 1994 and contrasted them with his positions a decade later.
Does he believe what he says or does he tailor his beliefs to his audience?
So what am I thinking as I watch the Republican National Convention?
I am thinking about those things I can do something about and which touch our everyday lives.
I’m thinking about how sad it is that many people in West Hollywood are too intimidated to sign a petition about term limits because they fear retribution from their City Councilmembers.
I’m thinking about how passing Measure J and about how electing the right people in Los Angeles may bring back the possibility of a Pink Line subway to West Hollywood.
I’m thinking about how we need to help our LGBT family in States like Minnesota, where people continue to vote on the rights of our community.
I’m thinking about cute boys. And I’m thinking about how lucky we are to have USC football starting its season this Saturday.
