This Week:

From: Dan Berkowitz, West Hollywood
Re: On Tom of Finland & Rainbow Stripes
I read S. J. Harker’s letter about the City’s sponsorship of the Tom of Finland Foundation’s Erotic Art Fair, and would like to respond, as I think some facts might interest Ms Harker and your other readers.
First, I’m not impartial: I served as President of the Tom of Finland Foundation for three years, and was on the board for several more.
I co-produced the Erotic Art Fairs, both here and in New York, for a number of years, and it was on my watch that the Fair first came to West Hollywood in 2003.
Though I’m a Lifetime Member of the Foundation, I’m no longer involved with the Fairs except as a visitor.
I won’t address the cultural and community benefits of the Fair; you either accept them or not.
However, what few people realize is that, while West Hollywood’s sponsorship of the Fair is very important to the Foundation, fiscally the City gets more from Tom of Finland than Tom of Finland gets from the City.
First, the City’s contribution is not cash – it’s the waiver of rental fees. True, if another group was willing to rent the space for those days, and couldn’t possibly do it any other time, the City might “lose” money on the rental; to my knowledge, that has never happened.
Even if it did, though, the return to the City would far outweigh the expense.
Each year, the Fair hosts more than 100 artists, assistants, spouses, and family members; several dozen volunteers; and well over 1,000 attendees. While some live in West Hollywood, most are visitors to the City, some from great distances.
They generate several thousand dollars in hotel stays (one reason the Marketing and Visitors Bureau has been an enthusiastic sponsor of the event for years), eat in West Hollywood restaurants, drink in West Hollywood bars, park at West Hollywood meters and garages, and probably pay more than a few West Hollywood parking tickets.
As the first and oldest event of its kind, the Fair also holds an iconic place in the history of gay and erotic art; the fact that West Hollywood is its home is good PR for the City.
Ms Harker has a legitimate point when she asks “How do we pick and choose which [non-profit] groups to co-sponsor and which groups to charge rental fees?”
One answer might be to examine which non-profits make a significant fiscal and PR contribution to the City in return for that sponsorship.

From: Terri Wilkenson, West Hollywood
Boy oh boy, you are back with a vengeance, aren’t you.
Tough to get interviews with county supervisors, exclusive audio interviews with and guest op-eds by members of congress, film director’s remembrances of world renowned Robert Hughes, excellent coverage of crimes and mysterious deaths, exposes of dirty dealings over developments, the other local publication’s failures and generally kicking all the other local medias’ behind.
I see improvements everywhere, not the least of which is no longer carrying Steve Martin, who is nothing but a mendacious gadfly.
The images are excellent and with you I don’t have to go to another page to view them. They are right there in the article – genius.
The ads are representative of the city – whomever you have selling them is doing a great job.
It’s easy to see why you have so many readers, and why you were so sorely missed when you took a hiatus.
You present the world with a world-class publication for a world-class city unlike any of the amateurish AOL Patches (of which WeHo claims to be one of the (ugh) better ones.
Anyway, I don’t know how I would get along with your comprehensive, incisive and erudite coverage. You are the thinking person’s online newspaper for a city with an awful lot of thinking people.
