During this multiple-digit heat wave, I am starkly reminded of one of Tennessee Williams’ famous lines, from Streetcar Named Desire; “All my life I have depended on the kindness of strangers.”
For some reason, heat creates mostly the opposite- anger, frustration, bickering, obsessive behavior, and in-your-face attitudes.
WeHo is a perfect example: More pedestrians ignoring drivers as they slowly waddle across streets on their cell phones, angrily glancing at drivers; more drivers in air-conditioned cars on THEIR cell phones refusing to give pedestrians the right of way.
Landlords trying to reduce utility costs by somehow rationing air conditioning wherever they can, and tenants too lazy in the heat to properly dispose of garbage.
This seems to be the time of year when waiters forget who gets what and hostesses smugly warning late-comers that there is a forty-five minute wait for seating.
Heat also does something to the odors from outdoor dining and the odors of the unwashed or uncaring on buses and subways.
But, I must admit, not nearly as bad as riding public transport in August in Rome or Milan or Paris.
For me, the heat also brings out political anger. Anger at Congress taking a “vacation” when for the past year they have done nothing except being wined and dined by lobbyists or ogling staffers or pages.
Anger at how much hatred there is against our President. I have been around to see Presidents since FDR, and not even Richard Nixon was as despised by democrats as Obama is by Republicans.
Let’s face it, the “moderate Republican base” is a work of fiction. The base now consists of rednecks, even billionaire redneck characters who hate Obama for only one reason: he’s black.
Yet, these people with calloused hands and brains cotton to someone like Romney who has never broken a sweat doing a full day’s hard labor and who is the poster boy for making hundreds of millions through Capital Gains.
August heat also churns up my dismay at the lack of real humor on television any longer.
Viewers now need a laugh track to be told when to smile or chuckle at home. And there is not a single show that wouldn’t be the same if you replaced the leads. There is no greatness in show business anymore.
Look at the Hollywood Walk of Fame, once limited to real stars and pioneers- and now featuring the likes of Erik Estrada and Kristie Alley.
Stars? Give me a break! And yet there are tourists who have no idea who Mabel Norman or Norma Talmadge or Walter Huston or King Vidor or Harold Lloyd were.
Forgotten in favor of Mick Jagger and the Stones or the Beach Boys or the Monkees.
Fame today consists of well-paid PR staff for the Kardashians and bimbo housewives, all suffering from vagina pectoris.
The heat also reduces conversation.
I miss real person-to-person conversation in this age of Twitter and Facebook and IPads and Blackberries.
I refuse to use my thumbs to communicate.
Heat of August or not, my anger is year-long.
