Phyllis Diller died peacefully in her sleep last week with a smile on her face.
I'd known her since 1955 when I was a young singer and she was a first-time female stand-up comic.
Phyllis Diller and Pat Rocco were close friends for 57 years.
We were together at the semi-chic Purple Onion night club in San Francisco, a basement hideaway that featured up-and-coming stars of the future like Johnny Mathis, Rod McQuen, the Kingston Trio, Mort Sahl, and more.
I was hired for four weeks, but held over for sixteen.
During that time Phyllis and I shared a dressing room about the size of a closet.
You get to know someone pretty well when you're doing three shows a night in such cramped quarters.
We spent some of our days going to movies together. She had five children and lived with them and her husband in a flat in North Beach - walking distance from the club.
I shared a house with the bass player and his wife. I didn't need a car.
We were always trying out new material, and even did a serious song duet (fortunately I recorded this on my little old tape recorder).
During a rehearsal some uniformed military men came to the club and carted me off.
Seems I'd forgotten to report for the draft. I went the next day (under guard), told them I was a homosexual, and got back in time for the show that night.
I told all this to Phyllis.
It was her understanding reaction that made her a life-long friend. Remember, this was 1955.
That friendship lasted until her death yesterday. David, my partner of 39 years, met her many years ago, and we've been to her Bel Air house several times.
Phyllis Diller and Pat Rocco were close friends for 57 years.
Once, just a few years ago, she even cooked and served us dinner.
Now she's gone - but she will NEVER be forgotten.
As the very FIRST female standup comic, she made history and made us all laugh uproariously in Vegas, on TV, on game shows, in clubs, at the movies, and everywhere she went, including entertaining the troops.
We also did a troop show together.
She had a big heart, and she kept in touch with her friends.
The calls and letters lasted between 1956 until yesterday. I received a note just two weeks ago. That's a friendship span of fifty-seven years.
During that time I staged "Phyllis Diller Film Festivals" at several theaters in Hawaii, and birthday parties for her fans here, including pool parties.
I sent her lots of pictures of these events, and she got a big kick out of them.
All this leads to say that my friend Phyllis Diller was a very exceptional person. Generous, loving, kind, and thoughtful.
I know the world will remember her for that outrageous cackle and her references to her fictional husband "Fang," but I'll be proud to have known her as the friend she's been all these years.
Those memories will never fade away.
