Two crosswalks in West Hollywood will continue to provide visitors a chance to walk “over the rainbow” ever anon, after the city council voted last week to make the rainbow crosswalks spanning San Vicente Boulevard at Santa Monica Boulevard permanent.

Initially approved for a single event - Gay Pride month - with the intention to restore the pavement to its original red, the crosswalks brought the city enough attention and publicity, said Mayor Jeffrey Prang, that they ought to remain.
“The area unofficially known as ‘Boystown,’” he said at a town hall meeting on Sunday, “is a main economic driver for the city.
"Anything we can do to promote and market it to people outside the city is a good thing.”
During the council debate on the issue, council member John Duran said the cross walks are, “critical to the tourists and young gay and lesbian people and not-so-young gay and lesbian people who are passing through from Iowa or Montana or Kansas.
“They cannot believe that they actually see a municipality where the rainbow colors are on display all year long. It tells them it is a sanctuary.
"It tells them there is a safe place in America where the LGBT community is celebrated.”
Not everyone is happy with the decision, however.
Activist Stephanie Harker asserts that the cost of painting the crosswalks is, “wasteful and extravagant…” and the effect is “barely seen.”
The initial cost of the temporary paint job was roughly $13,000.
Because the paint was water based, the colors have taken their share of wear and tear from traffic.
The permanent paint job will have to fulfill the State of California’s criterion for safety and permanence, so the paint that will be used will be a heavy, melted on thermoplastic acrylic with reflectivity.
City engineers say that that paint job will cost over $67,000.
Ms. Harken feels that the city ought to do something less expensive and more creative, such as place “more flags around the city or rainbow-striped power poles or [erecting] a rainbow arch over Boystown.”
Mayor Prang contends that the city has enough money to make permanent the rainbow crosswalks and to market the city in other creative ways.
