According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the mosquito is ravaging mankind this year with record numbers of West Nile virus cases in humans.
The Los Angeles County West Vector
The CDC says that thus far in 2012, 47 states have reported West Nile virus (MNV) infections in people, birds, or mosquitoes.
A total of 1118 cases of West Nile virus disease in people, including 41 deaths, have been reported to CDC.
Of these, 629 (56%) were classified as neuroinvasive disease (such as meningitis or encephalitis) and 489 (44%) were classified as non-neuroinvasive disease.
The 1118 cases reported thus far in 2012 is the highest number of West Nile virus disease cases reported to CDC through the third week in August since West Nile virus was first detected in the United States in 1999.
Approximately 75 percent of the cases have been reported from 5 states (Texas, Mississippi, Louisiana, South Dakota, and Oklahoma) with almost half of all cases have been reported from Texas.
In Texas public health officials have undertaken to conduct widespread aerial chemical spraying for mosquitoes.
The following facts concerning WNV nationally, statewide, countywide come from the Los Angeles County West Vector & Vector-Borne Disease Control District:
1. Nationally, this year has been the highest number of human WNV cases since the virus appeared in the US in 1999. Texas has over 500 of the 1,118 human cases reported in 2012.
2. The Los Angeles County West Vector & Vector-Borne Disease Control District has not performed aerial spraying in the last 20 years. The District has no plans to conduct aerial spraying now or in the future for mosquito control as is seen in Texas.
3. National:
2012: 1,118 Human Case; 41 deaths
2011: 104 Human Cases; 4 deaths
4. California:
2012: 32 Human Cases; 1 Death
2011: 19 Human Cases; 0 Deaths
5. LA County:
2012: 5 Human Cases; 0 Deaths
2011: 63 Human Cases; 4 Deaths (entire year)
2012: 59 Positive Zip Codes (Positive: Dead Birds, Sentinel Flocks, Mosquitoes, Dead Squirrels)
2011: 75 Positive Zip Codes (Positive: Dead Birds, Sentinel Flocks, Mosquitoes, Dead Squirrels)
If you find a dead bird, alert the proper authorities so they can test it for West Nile Virus.
As you can see, although national and statewide counts for WNV human infections are up this year, the human infection counts for Los Angeles County are significantly lower from 2011 to 2012.
Also, positive indicators (Dead Birds, Sentinel Flocks, Mosquitoes, Dead Squirrels) for LA County are lower from 2011 to 2012.
Mayor Jeffrey Prang, the West Hollywood representative for the district, encourages everyone who comes across a dead animal (squirrel, bird or other) to get into contact with the appropriate agency from this list:
