There are apparently more ways to making it big in the movie business than one might think.
A local actor named Vivek Shah, age 25, today stands accused of threatening five tycoons and their families with death if they failed to wire money to him offshore.

Mr. Shah was arrested earlier this month in Illinois for trying to extort millions of dollars from movie mogul Harvey Weinstein in New York, billionaire coal magnate Christopher Cline of West Virginia and Florida, Eric Lefkofsky, billionaire co-founder of Groupon in Illinois, Terry Pegula, a Florida oil executive and owner of the NHL’s Buffalo Sabres, the daughter of the late oilman Dan Duncan, a Texan.
He allegedly wrote and sent nearly identical letters to these men threatening their families’ safety if they turned down his demand for cash, federal authorities said.
The FBI arrested him on August 10 at his parents’ Schaumberg, Illinois residence.
He was captured there on a short visit; he apparently was on his way back to West Hollywood. Mr. Shah had reservations to shoot at a LA-area shooting range, says the FBI.
Law enforcement acted on an indictment brought against Mr. Shah in West Virginia because the coal magnate, Mr. Cline’s, reported receiving his letter to the police and FBI.

In the letter, which Mr. Cline received on June 26, Mr. Shah allegedly threatened to kill “several named members of his family… unless he transferred $13 million to an offshore bank account,” court papers say.
The FBI also learned of “four other extortion demand letters substantially the same as the one received by Mr. Cline,” said an affidavit signed by Postal Inspector Joshua Mehall.
Prosecutors say they have plenty of circumstantial evidence allegedly tying Mr. Shah to the letters, including security footage from nearby stores of him buying prepaid debit cards that he allegedly used to buy “Click-N-Ship” postage labels to send the letters, as well as to try to set up overseas bank accounts, said court papers.
WeHo resident Vivek Shah was charged in West Virginia with two counts of interference with commerce by threats, and two counts of transmitting threatening communications in interstate commerce, all relating to his alleged extortion of Mr. Cline.

The charges carry a maximum 40 years in prison.
Prosecutors in the other states have not yet decided whether to try him.
On his Facebook page, Mr. Shah portrayed an up-and-coming actor, featuring a regular stream of party photos next to celebs of one caliber or another.
He showed off photos of him posed with Angelina Jolie, Ozzy Osbourne, Zach Galifianakis and Sofia Vergara, along with others.
His prize “get” was with Tom Cruise.
He lists his city of residence on Facebook as Beverly Hills despite residing in West Hollywood.
Mr. Shah, lived in India as a child and speaks English, Hindi and Gujarati, and found it difficult to break through in film or TV; his screen acting credits never rose above minor roles.
The New York Daily News put his relative success in Hollywood in the following terms:
“The biggest exposure he got was in the 2010 romance ‘Our Family Wedding,’ starring Forest Whitaker and America Ferrara, in which he is billed as a ‘maitre d., according to IMDB.com.”
