I recently wrote on Twitter that if God were around today, He’d be an atheist.
Religion needs a new definition. My unabridged dictionary defines religion as “a belief binding the spiritual nature of Man to a supernatural being.”
What religion has become is a feeling of superiority that MY supernatural being is better, stronger, more powerful than YOURS.
An American general was fired a few years ago for stating that “Our” God (i.e. Christian) was better than “their” god, Allah.
Historically, what religion used to do was to agree that Man was an inferior being.
Then, somehow religion turned into a global spitting contest (only some far Eastern sects stayed out of the fray).
The Pharaohs, the Greek philosophers, the Roman legions- all reduced their opponents to rubble, actually or spiritually. There is no doubt that religion has killed more people than any “ordinary” war.
The history of the Mafia or the Mexican cartels is nothing compared to what Christians did during the Crusades and Inquisition, and what “Christian” Nazis did to Jews, and what Jews seem to be doing toward unfriendly Arab Palestinians.
Don Corleone is nothing compared to Popes, and Latino drug lords’ depravity cannot compare with Hitler’s “Jewish question” solution.
I mention religion only to focus on what it is doing currently in our own little rainbow village.
We have all the back-biting and snarling of the Methodists at the corner of Fairfax and Fountain, and we have, just down the street from them, the Persian Jews uncaring about their neighbors.
I think the time has come to worship quietly, or ignore worship altogether. Just not make a big issue out of it.
Take away legal eagles, and locksmiths and human rights advocates earning their billable hours.
It is time for us to realize that making religion the focal point of being “better” than others is not only misleading, it is dangerously false.
Pastors and priests and bishops and rabbis and imams are ordinary and fallible people (just check some of the recent headlines about perversion and greed and sins).
Religion, alas, does not make our daily struggles or survival better and therefore religion must stay in its place and not interfere in the well-being and benefits of a community.
Religious groups, by law, don’t even contribute to the tax base of our community, so let them shut up about anything other than having to do with some sort of weekly benefits to their congregation.
That goes for any group seeking to define itself as something over and above the common good.
Just as our Constitution demands a separation of Church and State, so there should be a separation of Church and economic and personal justice.

Werner Haas is a West Hollywood writer whose latest novel is named "Wasps." | Summary: Long Island is no longer a place for complacent suburbanites. It is now a festering ground for anti-social activity by bored or power-hungry teens.
The Wasps is a story of such a neo-Nazi gang made up of otherwise "ordinary" middle-class young people.
