Equality California (EQCA) is proud to announce today its State Farm Good Neighbor honoree and special host planned for its 2012 Los Angeles Equality Awards.
The event is scheduled for Saturday, August 18.
Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and Washington Post contributor, Jonathan Capeheart, will host the 2012 Los Angeles Equality Awards.
EQCA will honor Antelope Valley activist Sanie Andres with the State Farm Good Neighbor Award.
Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and Washington Post contributor, Jonathan Capeheart, will host the event.
Andres is a marriage and family therapist, community activist, and the founder of The Out Project, which serves as a support group for local lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth.
He is also the key success behind the newly launched OUTreach Center, the only LGBT resource in the High Desert. Andres has been influential in the launch of Gay-Straight Alliance clubs at several Antelope Valley high schools, and instrumental in the rapid growth of AV Gay Pride.
Under his leadership, Andres has brought visibility to the LGBT community and furthered equality.
"Sanie Andres embodies the true meaning of a good neighbor and grassroots activist. In order to make an impact and encourage change, you must first start within your own community," said Clarissa Filgioun, Equality California Board President.
"Equality California is very proud to honor Sanie with the State Farm Good Neighbor award for his community leadership, inspirational activism and advocacy on behalf of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people."
Andres was chosen from a pool of outstanding candidates nominated by members of the public. During this year's Los Angeles Equality Awards, Andres will receive the award alongside other honorees Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Children's Hospital Los Angeles.
Hosting the event will be Jonathan Capeheart, a Pulitzer Prize-winning writer for the Washington Post.
Capeheart is a member of the Washington Post editorial board and writes about politics and social issues for the PostPartisan blog. He also serves as a correspondent and contributor for MSNBC'sMorning Joe.
EQCA will honor Antelope Valley activist Sanie Andres with the State Farm Good Neighbor Award.
He was previously deputy editorial page editor of the New York Daily News, where he also served on its editorial board.
"Equality California is very excited to have Jonathan Capeheart hosting this year's Los Angeles Equality Awards," said Filigioun. "As an accomplished journalist and notable figure in political and social issues, Jonathan is the perfect host."
Each year, Equality California recognizes individuals and organizations that have made an impact on the movement to secure full and lasting equality for LGBT people at its annual Equality Awards-a series of formal galas and cocktail events held in San Francisco, San Diego, Palm Springs, Los Angeles and Sacramento.
Past honorees have included Facebook, Adam Lambert, Dolores Huerta, Molly Ringwald, Debra Messing, Arianna Huffington, Attorney General Kamala Harris, Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom and California Governor Jerry Brown.
