Longtime public servant Zev Yaroslavsky’s thoughts on running for Los Angeles Mayor and on Sheila Kuehl’s unofficial announcement to run for the seat he is vacating on the LA County Board of Supervisors.

Will Zev Yaroslavsky run for mayor of Los Angeles?
Politicos have made the question their favorite parlor game since LA City Council president Eric Garcetti and City Controller Wendy Greuel announced their intentions to run.

In June the Daily News reported that “friends and former political consultants of Zev Yaroslavsky are betting the Los Angeles County supervisor will announce he's running for mayor in the next few months.
“’After all the discussions I've had with him, I think he's running," said Rick Taylor, who has worked with Mr. Yaroslavsky on numerous political campaigns since 1997.
In addition to that friend’s prognostication, Wayne Avrashow, a close friend and former staffer to Yaroslavsky told the Daily News, “My feeling is that he will announce his candidacy.”
WeHo News got a few minutes to talk politics with LA County supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky this weekend, and while he still holds his cards close to his chest, his answers seem to indicate that he is tending toward a run for Mayor of Los Angeles next year.
When WeHo News asked at what point he would announce for the seat vacated by Antonio Villaraigosa when he is termed out, and Mr. Yaroslavsky said, “Not today.”
Following up on that by asking him when he would announce whether or not he would run, the four-term supervisor said, “I make no… give no deadlines, no dates, but sooner rather than later.”
In another telling tidbit when discussing the race to replace him on the County Board of Supervisors when he is termed out in 2014, he said, “I think endorsements are way over-rated. People vote for people because of what they think of the candidates themselves and not of who is supporting them. I think a lot of politicians overstate the importance of endorsements and have been disappointed as a result.”
He could easily have been referring to candidates Eric Garcetti and Wendy Greuel, who have been raising money and nailing down endorsements for months now.
As to raising money for a possible mayoral race, “I’m not a candidate, so I’m not raising any funds,” he said, “but if I decide to run, I have no doubt that will not be a problem.”

A Loyola Marymount University’s Center for the Study of Los Angeles survey of 1,600 residents in February showed a dead heat between the three leading candidates, Yaroslavsky, Greuel and Garcetti.
WeHo News also spoke to him about leaving the Board of Supes and the race to replace him.
Last week former State Senator and Assembly member Sheila Kuehl announced her intention to face off against Santa Monica Council member Bobby Shriver, who also said last week that he is seriously exploring running for LA County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky's seat in 2014.
Doing so on the Stonewall Democrats chat board, Ms. Kuehl said, “Well, since posts are beginning to appear about the race for Zev's seat in 2014, I just wanted to let all of you know that I am running for that Supervisorial seat and really looking forward to it!”
Mr. Yaroslavsky told WeHo News holding the seat gave him much satisfaction over the years.
“It’s a good seat to have,” he continued, “it’s a good job and you’re able to do a lot. I’ve had a lot of gratification from the opportunities I’ve had as supervisor and I highly recommend it to people who are politically active.”
On endorsing someone for his seat, he said, “It’s way too early for that. I wouldn’t rule it out, I wouldn’t rule it in, either.”
Additionally, he said, “I’m not grooming anybody [as a replacement].”
As far as Ms. Kuehl was concerned, he had high praise. “She’s a very talented woman who served the legislature well and has always been a good partner to me in a number of undertakings. She certainly could do the job.”
When asked about any downside from being Torie Osborn’s primary backer and original endorser in Ms. Osborn’s failed primary bid for the 50th Assembly district seat, he said, “I don’t think it has any impact on [her campaign for the Board], or anybody who endorsed somebody who didn’t win.”
