There are many people who consider West Hollywood as sort of the center of the gay world. But, what do we- City Fathers (and Mother), Chamber of Commerce, Visitors’ Bureau, et al, really provide that would bring people from all over the world?
Yes, there is an ambience perhaps not found elsewhere (not even in Romneyland, aka Utah) where same sex couples can stroll down our boulevards, holding hands, hugging, even kissing.
Ambience and gay bars are certainly not enough to lure visitors and get them to spend their euros and yen and pesos and cruzeiros.
We need a plan to turn WeHo into a tourist magnet worth traveling to, especially for the growing groups of gays, lesbians, transgenders and unsures.
My suggestion: start with WeHo hotels becoming more gay-friendly.
Create activities for out of towners, such as tourist vans that not only travel to WeHo sites of interest, but fill a whole day starting with breakfast at their coffee shop or nearby comfortable place.
Get a gay-owned catering company to prepare lunch boxes for a weather-permitting picnic in Griffith Park, or maybe Malibu. Offer special hotel coupons for discounts at local gay-owned restaurant.
In other words, fill their day with items of interest as well as stops that can be profitable to local merchants.
We’ve got a lot of talent in WeHo, actors, dancers, musicians, writers, directors and producers. Put them to work to create points of interest nightly and during the days on weekends.
We need some cabaret, revues, drama, music- well beyond the House of Blues and the Comedy Store. There are facilities at Plummer Park and the new Library to host events, indoors and out.
We need to establish a museum-like attraction to highlight gay art and innovations in everything from the Fine Arts to science and politics. It’s time to let the world know there is more to gay culture than homo-eroticism.
What this city needs is a planner who can take half-hearted efforts by the Chamber of Commerce and Visitors’ Bureau and create a global magnet for WeHo. Despite a down economy, people still are traveling and spending money.
Why not more of it here by keeping visitors busy, informed, eager to tell friends, and above all, willing to spend for attractions that are definitely giving them their money’s worth.

Werner Haas is a West Hollywood writer whose latest novel is named "Wasps." | Summary: Long Island is no longer a place for complacent suburbanites. It is now a festering ground for anti-social activity by bored or power-hungry teens.
The Wasps is a story of such a neo-Nazi gang made up of otherwise "ordinary" middle-class young people.
