Sundown on Sunset: Misty Gonzales

Music By Sean Patrick, West Hollywood, California

In a music world full of changes, with artists scrambling to find a way to promote themselves while writing and touring in the face of declining CD sales, it’s amazing to me how many dedicated musicians there still are out there pounding the pavement and entertaining for the sake of their songs.

I met Misty Gonzales at a BMI Acoustic Showcase at Genghis Cohen in West Hollywood. She proved not only to be a standout in the room, but also a person with deep-rooted feelings about what making music is all about on a personal level.

Genghis Cohen is one of the few venues in Los Angeles, to me, where any night you drop in you’ll hear real talent. It’s a place that forces an act to get to the meat of the performance if only by the limited space on stage.

To me there is no better way to hear a songwriter than by listening to a lone voice, stripped down and bare, belting it out for an intimate audience.

Misty grew up on the western slope of Colorado surrounded by a family of musicians. She remembers at the age of five attending her great-grandmother’s funeral at a gospel church.

The memory of the congregation’s full choir coming together to celebrate the memory of a life in the pain of a moment is one of power for Misty. It was, for her, a jumping off point for a life of creating her own music.

“Rock And Roll Freedom Show” is her latest record, produced by Grammy nominated Warren Huart. The songs are a journey of a singer facing a world that can be a lonely place for all of us, while finding her own way out.

“Go-Getter” opens the CD with a solidly classic rock feel and a story of what one might give up to get somewhere. It’s hard to find the ones to trust anywhere in this life.

From the little girl “So sweet living free, got a little mud in her hair” to “I can satisfy your deepest wish, I’ll see you’re a star, I’ll make you shine, all it takes is your warmest kiss”, Misty outlines the dangers of exposing your soul to the world. It gets very hard to tell who is a real friend, and weed through all the bogus offers to get to the heart of a true believer.

Of course, if all you want is money it’s an easy choice, but that’s not what Misty’s about.

Misty and her partner, Tom Wilson formed Freedom Child Entertainment to raise funds for the “Freedom To Dream” project to help children in Haiti through education and music.

Her self-described domestic goal is to build a “‘Dream Ranch.’ This facility would house a summer program bringing in kids from 12 to 16 years old to help them learn life and work skills from professionals in a variety of fields, music and fields outside of the entertainment industry.’”

Misty’s not waiting for personal financial success to give back to the world. She’s doing it right from the start with part of every CD sold.

All of us, no matter what we present to the world, have our inner demons and fears. “Can’t Find My Way Alone” is her take on what she might have given up to believe in herself.

Not only is she wary of those promising stardom for a kiss, she’s also giving up the safety of staying home. “If you were a boy and I were a girl, if we lived in the place they called the world, then would you love me and say that you do, then would I be enough for you.”

Working through this life as a musician takes you everyplace but home. Most of us don’t have an idea of the sacrifice that takes, even if we’re dedicated to our lives and individual projects.

In “I’m Coming Home,” Misty softly gives us her take in an almost Country feel. “It’s hard on you it’s hard on me, it’s temporary I hope you see, I’m trying to give you everything you need, yea, I’m coming home.”

Misty also played the Key Club recently with a full-on floor show with acrobatics and ‘illuminated hula-hoops’ for her “Rock And Roll Freedom Show” which proves her savvy not only in songwriting, but real, old-fashioned entertainment.

Misty and her west coast band are co-headlining at the Roxy at 11 pm on Friday, August 17 in West Hollywood for the Sunset Strip Music Festival.

She’s definitely worth marking on your SSMF band list, and it’s great to know that she’s spreading the love by giving back so much of herself. www.MistyFreeChild.com
