Now that the President himself has adopted the term "ObamaCare" to desccribe his historic health care initiative, it is up to local community organizations to remove the myths and frauds from the debate on its effects on the individual - especially women.

In that spirit, the National Council of Jewish Women/Los Angeles (NCJW/LA) presents a panel of experts who will address what the Affordable Care Act (ACA) is and is not, including what health care reform means to women.
This educational event will be held on Wednesday, August 22, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at NCJW/LA Council House, 543 N. Fairfax Ave., Los Angeles, 90036.
"National Council of Jewish Women worked hard to achieve the enactment of the Affordable Care Act and the many advances for women's health it affords," says Donna Benjamin, NCJW/LA Advocacy Committee member and program chair. "Many people are either confused by or not aware of the ACA--referred to by some as 'Obamacare'--and its benefits. We are presenting this event to educate the public about how it will impact their lives."
The panel discussion will be moderated by Michael Hiltzik, author of The New Deal: A Modern History and business columnist for the Los Angeles Times. Scheduled speakers include:
• Susan Berke Fogel, JD, Director of Reproductive Health for National Health Law Program
• Jim Lott, MD, Executive Vice President of the Hospital Association of Southern California
• Mark Peterson, Professor of Public Policy, Political Science, and Law in the Department of Public Policy at UCLA
• Janice Rocco, Deputy Commissioner, Health Policy and Reform, for the California Department of Insurance
• Paul Song, MD, Board Director of Reproductive Health for National Health Law Program

For more information or to RSVP, contact Ruth Williams, Director of Advocacy, at 323-852-8503 or ruth@ncjwla.org.
ABOUT THE ACA
Signed into law by President Obama on March 23, 2010, the Affordable Care Act (ACA), eliminates sex discrimination by preventing insurance companies from charging women higher premiums than men. It also requires insurance plans to cover an array of critical preventive services for women, without co-pays or other out-of-pocket expenses, including mammograms, Pap tests, a wide range of prenatal screenings, the full range of FDA-approved contraceptives, lactation consultations and supplies, and domestic violence screenings.
Because of the Affordable Care Act, families will no longer suffer bankruptcy due to high medical bills, and all families will have the resources for routine, chronic, and emergency health care. Children with pre-existing conditions will not be able to be denied coverage, young adults will be able to stay on their parents' plans until they are 26 years old, and seniors' Medicare prescription drug coverage (Part D) will become more affordable because the ACA gradually closes the gap in drug coverage known as the "Donut Hole." And by 2014, insurance carriers will no longer be able to deny coverage to anyone based on pre-existing conditions. The provisions of the law come into effect in stages and will be fully implemented by 2014.
ABOUT NCJW/LA
The National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) is a grassroots organization of volunteers and advocates who turn progressive ideals into action. Inspired by Jewish values, NCJW strives for social justice by improving the quality of life for women, children, and families and by safeguarding individual rights and freedoms. NCJW's Los Angeles section has been at the forefront of social change for more than a century by providing the community with programs and services. Today, NCJW/LA serves more than 15,000 individuals each year by providing over 220,000 hours of programs and services with the support of 400 volunteers.
