AOL Patch on murder: Oh, never mind...
08/10/2012
By WeHo News staff, West Hollywood, California

AOL Patch commits another unforced error.

AOL plans to cut back on "the much-maligned" Patch's news reporting to focus on user-generated business listings not unlike Craigslist.com.

No murders took place in West Hollywood last month, despite AOL Patch's West Hollywood site's initial reporting.

Our online newspaper has never before reported the fact there were no murders in the Creative City, but we must do so today because our local competitor, the West Hollywood AOL Patch, had to backtrack on a false report they issued that listed a death on the 1400 block of Fairfax Avenue on July 27 as murder – not even suspicious or homicide.

In today’s AOL Patch (part of an 850-plus news site explosion over the past two years by the mega-Internet giant), the “news” trumpets “Death on Fairfax Avenue Was Due to Natural Causes.”

WeHo News also carries the weekly crime report by CrimeMapping.com.

They claim that the sheriff department is responsible for their error of fact, saying, they use “CrimeMapping.com to compile its weekly police blotter…” and that “CrimeMapping.com… listed the death as a “criminal homicide: murder.”

WeHo News also uses the same crime mapping report – our publication gets daily reports on all crimes reported through the WeHo Sheriff’s Department to the same site and publishes a weeklyCrime Blotter (because the link changes, you can always find it quickly in our City Section or with a site search).

When we noticed the report of a murder (things like that get our full attention), we called homicide to inquire for more details to prepare a full story on the subject.

Sheriff’s homicide bureau in Huntington Park told us they reported a death from natural causes on the same block on that date.

After checking the facts, we published no story because there was no story.

Patch is a nationwide chain of local news sites.

No other locally written and published media outlet reported that death as a murder, only the one that is run by the 850-site national chain AOL.

The editor of this local AOL publication, however, waited ten days to ring up homicide to check into the death and its causes – and apparently only because its nervous readership demanded a follow up to the erroneous crime blotter listing.

Mistakes seem to pop up like weed “patches” on this publication.

Last month WeHo News reported that the site’s 50th Assembly district election results contained “patchy” and incorrect results – both the vote count and the order of finish were reported incorrectly.

Marta Evry, a political blogger in Venice, told WeHo News after we published our correct account of the election’s finish, “I find the Patch sites are notoriously error prone.”

When asked about the error on her site and with her byline, the Santa Monica publication's editor, Jenna Chandler pawned off responsibility to another editor at a neighboring site, saying, "I only edit Santa Monica Patch. Venice Patch is edited by Paul Chavez."

The local publication's reputation here was hamstrung only a few weeks after opening shop in WeHo - by a case of plagiarism.

The local Patch had to apologize for plagiarizing John Chase's obituary from a blogger only a few weeks after it opened shop in town.

One of their "professional" writers stole an obituary from a blogger and put their name on it to note the death of a much-beloved community member, urban designer John Chase.

The dean of Los Angeles journalism, Kevin Roderick at LAObserved.com regularly points out the AOL chain’s penchant for publishing first and asking questions later.

Recently, his publication featured a story showing how AOL tries to drive its readership numbers up with false headlines.

The local AOL Patch is edited by its third editor in the two self-proclaimed "successful" years of publishing in WeHo - and that by a "guest editor" who does not live in West Hollywood, even though AOL requires that their editors live in "or damn close to the relevant market location" and the communities on which they report.

Marcia Parker, the West Coast editorial director, told WeHo News in May that the WeHo publication's new editor would "be announced soon," however, no hiring announcement has come down the pike.

The huge losses suffered by AOL in rolling out their product ($150 million to gain an average of only 12,000 readers per month per market – compare that to WeHo News' average 80,500 readers) has the parent company planning to change its “Patches” from a news focus to business and commercial listings.

Writes Ad Age Digital on July 25, according to AOL CEO Tim Armstrong, “The much-maligned news network was being rebuilt, with its original code base totally scratched… while the first generation of Patch relied on journalists creating news about a town, the next iteration will also push more into listings and commerce.”
