The other night I dreamed a dream of a dreamland.
Because I’ll be long gone by this date, I wrote my essay revealing this dream for publication today.

West Hollywood, California, August 6, 2025 - As much as I detest such political elements, term limits are now the order of business for the elected City Council.
The residents who bother to vote finally were able to have their way with elected terms. No more time to build empires or dip too far into the honey-pot of public coffers.

Although now officially out of the game, a few former, long-time council-folk attend every weekly Council meeting, which have always been a highlight of the social and political scene here.
Council meetings are more interesting now that all presentations and such festivities are conducted at City Hall. Term limits also prevent commission and board members from becoming eternal fixtures.
Somehow, the city still exists and moves rather smoothly toward the future.
The library is now formally dedicated to the reign, er, tenure of its longest serving Council member.
Other elected officers got nods with plaques at City Hall or on park benches.
Many administrators, once recognized with generous pensions, must forfeit for the time they are on recall. A former city manager still sends us New Year greetings from his residences in Dubai.
The rank and file union members must now negotiate with a board of both citizens and city managers. In spite of the many social services still provided, the number of staff at City Hall has declined by nearly 20 percent as “production” has now become an operative word in their daily burden.

The $16 million mechanical garage which was erected for city hall employee parking had been dismantled and sold for scrap shortly after it ceased to function properly during its initial year of operation. Instead of placing cars in slots, it crushed and filed them.
Only two of the vehicles which were stuck in it could be salvaged. Since the bulk of city hall workers now live within the boundaries of West Hollywood, thanks to a well-designed employee housing plan, parking at work is not much of a concern for them.
Plummer Park has welcomed the return of the Audubon Sanctuary, office and bookstore.
The West Hollywood Tree Preservation Society has combined with the former and most able, true citizens who were known as the Protect Plummer Park group to form the West Hollywood Arboretum.
With city funds they have rehabilitated the park and now conduct classes in the use and care of native plants for residents and local schoolchildren.

The Great Hall and other structures there have been modernized and their original, classic designs retained.
Residential streets which intersect avenues and boulevards are now cul-de-sacs. Through traffic is forbidden.
Street lights are lower and sidewalks are visible at night – and the pavements are level and not broken.
A dog park has been established at Library Park, which is now well-lighted at night by solar panels on the parking structure.
The children’s area is expanded to reflect the changing demographics of the area.
Only native plants are now allowed in landscaping and drip watering is the rule. No sprinklers.
All residential buildings of four units or less must have a solar unit capable of supporting communication, some lighting and some refrigeration during power outages.
All city buildings must now have white roofs.
Condominium and apartment buildings are required to maintain emergency water and food supplies for residents.

Bike lanes are everywhere and, in some cases have taken over vehicle lanes.
Pride Week is still mightily celebrated and the section of San Vicente between Santa Monica and Melrose is permanently closed. This is where the Pride Festival, the Book Fair and other major events take place.
By closing that space vehicle accidents on San Vicente have ceased.
The city has ventured into a new idea of eminent domain by using that process to acquire foreclosed buildings, re-habilitating them and selling to fiscally responsible buyers.
Many are included in the employee housing plan. This process helps insure that buildings do not fall into disrepair or become shelter for the homeless.
The city has also invested in housing for senior gay men and women so that they can remain a part of the community and not be forced to leave when they retire because of age or infirmity.
Police now patrol on foot and on bikes. Regular beats have been established so that patrolling deputies can get to know their areas well and residents get to know and rely on them.
This year’s theme of the Sheriff’s Open House is “Come meet YOUR personal cop.”
