Indie film returns to the Creative City at the end of the month after, well, too long.
Sundance Cinemas LLC, the motion picture theatre company, this week announced the grand opening date of the completely refurbished Sundance Sunset Cinema at 8000 Sunset Blvd. (at Crescent Heights) for Friday, August 31st, 2012.
The space, formerly occupied by Laemmle Sunset 5 for almost 20 years, came open in 2011 when the Laemmle clan decided to build new theatres rather than renew their lease and renovate in WeHo.

Sundance Cinemas, which is growing rapidly in indie film markets around the country with theatres in Seattle, Madison, San Francisco, Westchester, NY, and Houston, snapped up the property and began nesting at the historic location once occupied by Schwab’s Pharmacy.
In celebration of their new WeHo-adjacent (the back of the theatre abuts the Creative City), Sundance Cinemas will host three pre-opening celebration events, benefitting local non-profit organizations:
First, on Monday, August 27th: A Celebration of Film: Sundance Institute
The next night, onTuesday, August 28th: Filmmakers and the Community: Outfest
Followed by a Wednesday, August 29th showing of: Sand Rocks & Sea: Heal The Bay A Night To Benefit Rivers, Beaches & Oceans.
The latter will include a special presentation of Jamie Redford's new documentary 'Watershed: Exploring A New Water Ethic For The New West'. Produced by The Redford Center with filmmakers in person.
The theatres all offer “the best in film viewing amenities, with stadium seated auditoriums with extra comfortable (rocking) reserved seats, digital sound and superior film and pre-show presentation featuring shorts and features from the Sundance Channel.”

Sundance Group President Robert Redford says, "I discovered my love of movies at a little single screen theatre on the west side of Los Angeles as a boy.
“Having this 'hometown' theatre dedicated to exhibiting the work of independent filmmakers is a considerable goal achieved, and having the Sundance Institute as a neighbor and collaborator on special programs will be a tremendous asset to our patrons.”
Sundance Cinemas President and CEO Paul Richardson said, "The new Sundance Sunset Cinema is going to be a gem located in the heart of Hollywood in Los Angeles.
“It's long been a dream to build a theatre in my home town, and I'm certain that this will be a place that patrons will enjoy as much as I will".
Programming will specialize in American Independent and foreign language titles.
According to their press release, “We only play the finest film choices available. The atmosphere and finishes throughout the theatre have the look and feel of both the Sundance and community aesthetic. We feature local artists on our gallery wall space. We have bars and bistros, lounges with Wi-Fi access and Sundance retail all designed to create a 'third place' atmosphere.”
While the theatre is still under construction, they have invited the press and civic leaders to a hard-hat walk through in mid-month.
The new Sundance Cinemas sits on the same location as the historic Schwab's Pharmacy at Crescent Heights and Sunset Boulevards.
The goal is to create a space that includes a “beautiful lounge to hang out in, sip a cocktail, talk about movies and generally relax.
The theatre is currently working on building its staff.
