Apparently some of our valued seniors do not like resting their weary tuchases on a mere rail of a bench while awaiting a bus, so the City of West Hollywood is reconsidering the newly-installed space savers at certain bus stops around town.

A little history: in 2009, the city set out to install new bus benches throughout the city.
Several locations lacked adequate sidewalk widths and American with Disabilities Act (ADA) clearances for wheelchairs to hold normal bus benches, so staff bought 16 "sitting rails," installing them at 12 locations.
Staff made the decision to place the rails without council approval and the complaints about the sitting rails from some elders who say the rails provide inadequate support for their backsides rolled into council offices.
The complainants said that, because the rails have no backs, they are uncomfortable and do not hold heavy parcels properly; they sometimes fall to the ground.
It apparently never occurred to these seniors that placing their parcels on the ground would prevent them from falling to the ground.

You can see the quandary facing staff, since according to the federal government, people in wheelchairs have rights to use the city sidewalk equal a senior’s right to sit in comfort.
Yet city staff apparently failed to consider the seniors’ comfort when purchasing rails that would allow people with disabilities to pass the public sidewalk, causing this pain in the tukas to seniors.
Google the "American Right of Senior Ensconcement (ARSE)" for more information on these dueling rights.
By all accounts, seniors in WeHo outnumber residents in wheelchairs, and politicians can count, so you won’t be surprised to hear the rest.
During the regular council meeting, the staff received direction to replace the tuchas-torturers with seats more to seniors’ liking where their presence does not impede the ability of those in wheelchairs to pass by.
They have 90 days to present council with their options.
Director of Public Works Oscar Delgado is out of the office this week, presumably on a nationwide hunt for folding bus benches with weather-proof down cushioning, so he could not respond to comment.
Who said being on city staff was an enviable job?
It sounds more like a pain in the, well, you know...
