Assembly race in WeHo takes twist
07/23/2012
By WeHo News staff, West Hollywood, California

WeHo/Bev Hills Dems fail to endorse – West Hollywood’s final election results come in

In last week’s WeHo/Beverly Hills Democratic Club endorsement meeting, neither the incumbent nor the challenger received enough votes to gain the club’s endorsement.

Incumbent Assembly member Betsy Butler missed the 60 percent threshold that would have gained her the influential club’s nod by a single vote.

Ms. Butler received 25 votes with 26 needed to get the club’s endorsement. No motion to endorse Mayor Bloom came from the membership.

Incumbent Betsy Butler won the primary race and will face off against fellow Democrat Santa Monica Mayor Richard Bloom.

One person abstained from voting.

Because the club would like to endorse in the important race, they voted to reschedule another endorsement meeting for the September gathering.

Mayor Bloom took credit for blocking a Butler endorsement, saying n a written statement, “Tonight's vote is a big victory for my campaign.

"It underscores the growing support for my candidacy in the 50th Assembly District..."

A political blogger with deep ties to the fourth-place Torie Osborn campaign, Venice resident Marta Evry, trumpeted the situation as a Butler “loss” and a “surprise upset,” despite the fact there was no winner.

West Hollywood Mayor Jeffrey Prang, a Butler supporter, told WeHo News that the many Osborn supporters who flooded the January endorsement meeting to gain (some said game) that club’s endorsement were not in evidence at the meeting.

Santa Monica Mayor Richard Bloom took second place in the primary but finished third in West Hollywood.

“Those in attendance were the regulars,” he said. “Richard Bloom is a known quantity, he has a lot of supporters and they worked hard.”

The local AOL publication’s editor (who lives outside West Hollywood and the Assembly district) followed Ms. Evry’s political line.

In addition, the publication again misreported the race’s finish by placing Ms. Osborn in third, not fourth and last place.

The original AOL publication’s reporting on the race’s final tally also misreported the finish, but changed the report after WeHo News published that actual numbers.

The time stamp on the AOL correction says it was corrected at 10:30 am, but provides no date.

The editor of Santa Monica and Venice Patch, Jenna Chandler, failed to respond to an inquiry into the matter.

Stonewall Democratic club holds their endorsement meeting tonight at 7 pm at Plummer Park.

In other Assembly race news, WeHo News obtained from the Office of the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk’s office the final election results from the City of West Hollywood for all races.

Of the 23,505 registered voters living in West Hollywood, 5,290 voted – a 22.51 percent rate.

The number of people who voted, by party, were:

 Democrats

    3666

 Republicans

      695

 No Party

      811

 American Independent

        54

 Green Party

        38

 Libertarian

        22

 Peace & Freedom

         4

The Democratic vote for President went to an unchallenged President Obama, who netted 3,235 votes.

Torie Osborn won the day in the Creative City but took fourth place in the district-wide voting.

On the Republican side, Mitt Romney’s campaign netted only 426 votes from WeHo – 269 votes fewer than the total that registered GOP votes cast.

Ron Paul won 121 of those WeHo GOP votes, with Newt Gingrich receiving 24, openly-gay candidate Fred Karger winning 21, Rick Santorum 20 and “Buddy” Roemer 6 votes.

The US Senate primary saw Sen. Dianne Feinstein take even more votes than did the President – 3,813.

The race for the newly-drawn Congressional District, the 28th, with 29th district incumbent Rep. Adam Schiff running against six challengers, took in 3,200 West Hollywood votes.

In the abovementioned and newly-drawn 50th Assembly district race, Torie Osborn finished in first place in the City of West Hollywood with 1,575 votes, outstripping the district-wide winner, incumbent Betsy Butler’s total of 1,349 by 226 votes.

Santa Monica Mayor Richard Bloom finished third in WeHo gaining 1119 votes.

West Hollywood favorite son, GOP candidate Brad Torgan, who finished in third place district-wide, netted only 622 votes in WeHo  – 73 fewer than Republican votes cast in the election.
