Shocked – were you shocked top hear that another lunatic with military-styled automatic weapons shot up a movie theatre?
Why were you shocked?
This sort of incident has become so common in our country that shock is replaced by a simple question: “Again?”
We glorify the absolute insanity of war. Every kid who can read or watch television knows more about guns from watching police, crime and war dramas than I did as a teenager.

When there were displays of the various divisions of the LA Sheriff Department at an “open house” in years past, the biggest draw for young boys was often the SWAT booth. Not because they were interested in the deterrent features of SWAT but because they could actually pick up and fondle an automatic weapon.
In 2004 our Congress, in its superior wisdom and with the prodding of the NRA, rescinded the ban on the sale of automatic weapons.
Now, anybody can amble on down to Target or WalMart and buy a rifle which would make my 1951 military issued M-1 look like a toy.
There is not one single elected politician who has the courage to do battle with the National Rifle Association – which doesn’t just cajole politicians, it threatens them to conform to its policies.
How many unregistered weapons do you suppose reside in West Hollywood? How many registered weapons?
Most people who retain guns do so quietly, hiding them from view, hopefully having them sequestered with trigger locks, in a locker. But, don’t count on that.
Most people who own handguns keep them loaded and in an easily accessible place. Otherwise, why keep them?
We are infected by the very idea of guns. But, it’s not only us. A place like Norway, with its truly open society, had banned handguns right after WWII.

When I lived there in 1953, it was extremely difficult to obtain even a hunting rifle or shotgun. Yet, one of the most notorious mass killings of peaceful citizens took place there, carried out by a madman who owned military weapons.
If I were a cop today I’d be constantly looking over my shoulder and listening for the click of a magazine being set in a weapon. No wonder the LASD deputies have to wear body armor all the time.
WeHo is a relatively peaceful place, but we have lots of targets for burglars and holdup goons. We have to learn to trust our police to respond top gun violence and not take up our own weapons in fear.
I knew Charlton Heston well enough to have had several conversations with him about gun control. He was not an ill-informed man. He was articulate and well-read – he read all the time.
Yet, when it came to the topic of controlling the guns in the US, he was a parrot of the NRA. Closed case.
His reaction to gun control mirrors that of too many in our country that react without really thinking about the subject.
Shocked? Really?
