A West Hollywood man and two of his friends from Hollywood are awfully glad the Sheriff's Malibu Search and Rescue Team (SAR) exists.

The trio got lost and stranded in a canyon below Malibu Canyon Road yesterday when they were separated from two other friends on a hike in the Rindge Dam area 600 feet below Malibu Canyon Road.
The two other members of the hiking party used unmaintained trails to make their way out of the canyon and call for help.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Malibu Search and Rescue Team, accompanied by Los Angeles County Fire Department (LACoFD) personnel, responded to the scene.
An LACoFD helicopter scouted the area and determined that an air evacuation would be too dangerous in darkness, but the SAR team determined that leaving the lost and stranded hikers overnight in the deep canyon was not an option.
They set up a technical rope retrieval system.

Four Malibu S & R team members remained on Malibu Canyon Road to operate the equipment while eight Malibu S & R team members and four LACoFD personnel deployed rappelling over the side of the Malibu Canyon Road.
The video link below shows a Malibu Search & Rescue team member bringing one of the victims up the vertical spillway.
According to the Sheriff’s Department press release, the crew ascended more than 120 feet while contending with a flowing waterfall.
All this was accomplished in the dark of night with nothing but flashlights to guide their way.
The names of the stranded and rescued hikers were not released, only their ages and cities of residence.
One was a 19-year-old woman and another a 26-year-old man, both from Hollywood, and a 22-year-old West Hollywood man.
LACoFD rescue paramedics met the trio atop the canyon edge determined the two men were uninjured.
The woman had suffered a knee and ankle injury but declined to go to a hospital, choosing to seek her own medical treatment.
Begun at 10:30 pm the night before, the rescue ended after seven hours just as dawn broached at 5:30 Friday morning
Sheriff's Reserve Sergeant David Katz, Malibu Search and Rescue Team, said, “Members of this hiking party were able to seek help, were safely rescued, and only one of the five hikers suffered an injury.
“However, others [in the past] have not been so fortunate.
Sadly, during the last six months, Malibu Search and Rescue Team members have responded to the dam on two other occasions, each time retrieving the body of a hiker who had suffered fatal injuries.”
He suggested that hikers fill out a hiker sheet to notify first responders of their plans.
“Hiking/Camping is a fun way to get family and friends together to enjoy the outdoors and to get some physical activity,” he said.
“However, you should always be prepared for the unexpected. Before you leave, please fill out Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Search and Rescue – Hiking Plan sheet and provide it to a loved one to hold onto just in case something happens to a member of your hiking/camping expedition.”
See a video of the rescue below... (story continues after the jump)

Search and Rescue Team members are reserve sheriff’s deputies who volunteer their time to help others for $1 a year, and who partner with sheriff’s civilian volunteers who volunteer for free.
There are over 150 members of the eight Search and Rescue teams of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, who were activated for over 450 search and rescue missions last year, making it one of the most active counties for search and rescue missions in the nation.
Reserve deputies and civilian volunteers are supervised by full-time sheriff’s deputies. http://lasdreserve.org/
If you would like more information on how to prepare for your hiking / camping trip, please visit the Center for Disease Control’s camping website at

There are over 850 LASD reserve sheriff's deputies who work patrol, jails, search and rescue, motorcycle patrol, mounted posse, investigations, and more, as team members of the second largest policing agency in the nation. www.lasd.orghttp://lasdreserve.org/
