West Hollywood City Council marathons, er, meetings always begin at or around 6:30 pm on the first and third Mondays of the month, but more often than not last well past midnight.
The situation has gotten out of hand, according to Mayor Jeffrey Prang, who says that meetings lasting until 12:30 or 1 am are “absurd,” for both the public and the council.
“We have jobs to go the day of the meetings and the next day,” he told WeHo News, “and if I have to be up at 5 am the day of a meeting that lasts until 1 am, no one can expect me to exercise good judgment.
“Likewise, how can I be expected to function in my day job an less than four hours’ sleep?”
Yet, because the plan his office put forward to lessen the time involved in giving presentations to constituents is new business and addressed at the end of the council session, it has been on the last two agendas and postponed twice because of late-running meetings.

The problem has cropped up more frequently lately than in years past, for example, in the late June meeting, Mayor Prang left the dais just after 11 pm, and because a vote on El Mirador’s fate toed 2-2, the item had to return the following meeting so that he could cast his vote – delaying the other business at hand.
Mayor Prang acknowledges that the agendas as of late have been packed with many complex, and therefore time consuming, issues, but he has a plan to cut from 45-60 minutes from the marathon meetings by dropping presentations to constituents when possible.
“We can make it the Mayor’s prerogative to delay the presentations for another, less jam packed agenda unless there’s some urgency to it,” he said.
“Recognitions are important,” said the Mayor, “and each council member ought to have a chance to recognize members of the community, but the problem is that people and businesses that come to conduct business are often put out because their item is postponed.”
Additionally, he said, the council members cannot make important decisions in the wee hours after a long day’s work and equally long council meeting.
Because this week’s meeting went so long, the city’s trash hauler’s proposal to enhance their offered services and take on other maintenance services at a saving to the city could not be decided because the Mayor abstained from the vote.
“I want to say how absurd and stupid it is that we are here having an important conversation about this subject at 12:15 ay night… I am not prepared to make a thoughtful… decision at this time of night,” he said before casting his abstention.
The proposal to shorten meetings will be taken up at the next meeting and discussed, that is if time allows.
