Is West Hollywood as safe a city as civic leaders would insist?
Perhaps, but recent data shows that crime is increasing in WeHo several times faster in WeHo than in the rest of the county.
The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department put out its bi-annual crime report comparing crime statistics year-to-date (YTD) with last year’s by community.
While the report led with trumpeting a five-year gradual decrease and a small increase over 20122 in Part 1 crime in LA Sheriff patrolled areas of the county (unincorporated areas and contract cities), the data for West Hollywood showed an alarming increase in both the five- and one-year data.

Part 1 crimes (homicide, arson, aggravated assault, robbery, rape, larceny theft and grand theft auto) in WeHo increased by 35.5 percent between the first six months of 2007 and the first six months of 2012.
In Sheriff’s patrolled areas Part 1 crime decreased 16.9 percent over the same five year period.
Along the same vein, Part 1 crime in the Creative City increased 23 percent, while the Sheriff patrolled areas increased only 6.02 percent over 2011.
That means West Hollywood has, over the past year, nearly quadrupled the increases in crime seen by the Sheriff patrolled areas.
The two bright spots came in West Hollywood rape and grand theft auto figures.
Forcible rape dropped in both the five- and one-year figures showing decreases of 34.8 and 33.6 percent, respectively.
That however, failed to keep pace with the overall drop in rape of 40.8 and 40 percent countywide.
Grand theft auto showed decreases in the five-year data of 35 percent and 4 percent over last year, beating the county figure of 1.81 percent fall off.
A glitch in reporting policies prevented the single homicide inside WeHo city limits this year from appearing on the report, softening the statistics slightly (counting it would have meant a 100 percent increase in homicides instead of the zero percent documented).
The killing of a Metro bus driver at Santa Monica and La Cienega Boulevards on May 20, 2012 counted not as a West Hollywood crime statistic, but as a Transit Services Bureau of Los Angeles County, according to Sheriff spokesperson Steve Whitmore.

“That’s because the Metro bus and rail system is under contract with the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority and it goes across all jurisdictions,” he said.
“This [homicide] actually happened on the bus,” even though the bus sat in the City of West Hollywood at the time, he said.
Statistics for other violent crimes rose precipitously over both the five- and one-year time frames:
Aggravated assault - usually fueled by the alcohol sold in the city's many bars and nightclubs - showed a startling 66.7 percent increase over 2007, but a “mere” 11.7 percent increase from 2011 to 2012.
The Sheriff's countywide data showed a 6.43 percent fall off and a 10.4 percent increase, respectively.
Robbery rose nearly 12 and 16.7 percent, respectively.
The Sheriff's countywide data showed a 26.9 percent fall off and a 6.87 percent increase, respectively.
Property crimes also jumped at a higher rate than the other Sheriff-served communities.
Burglary in WeHo rose 63.6 and 42.3 percent.
The Sheriff's countywide data showed a 6.43 percent fall off and a 10.4 percent increase, respectively.
Larceny theft rose 39.2 and 24 percent.
The Sheriff's countywide data showed a 9.53 percent fall off and a 7.55 percent increase, respectively.
Arson played a large role in this year’s data, as the so-called New Year's arsonist, suspect Harry Burkhardt, is alleged to have set as many as 49 fires throughout the region between December 30, 2011 and January 3, 2012.
Seven of the blazes attributed to him were set January 1-3 in West Hollywood proper.
For West Hollywood, arson incidents skyrocketed 339 percent over five years ago and 167.8 perccent over last year.
The Sheriff's countywide data showed a 42.68 percent fall off and a 7.14 percent increase, respectively.
Look forward to an in-depth interview with West Hollywood branch station Captain Kelley Fraser on crime trends in WeHo later this month.
