The GOP vice-presidential nominee, Paul Ryan, told so many fibs his fibula coverings ought to have caught fire.

HAAS-TA LA VISTA: A simpler time
07/09/2012
Op-ed by Werner Haas, West Hollywood, California

There was nothing worth watching this July night on summer TV.

Werner Haas is a West Hollywood writer whose latest novel is named "Wasps."

The rest of my household was watching Bimbo-TV (aka “Real Housewives” and “The Kardashians”), so I turned to Turner Classic movies where they were showing “The Glen Miller Story” from 1954.

I admit to getting a little teary-eyed. Not because James Stewart and June Allyson gave perhaps the worst performances of their lengthy careers, but because everything was so much simpler back then, and I was part of it.

I grew up during those times. Sanitized as this movie was - Stewart, even broke, was wearing a suit and tie (the slacks were likely “pressed” under the mattress over night), and when June Allyson got sick no one asked if she had insurance- this was a far less complicated and convoluted era than I live in now.

There was no TV when I was in school. Window fans, but no AC, buses and streetcars and trolleys, but no car.

I look back at those Glen Miller era time and recall I saw a good deal of it. I saw entertainers and touring bands at our local downtown movie house in Indianapolis.

I remember names and faces most people today never heard of- Henry Busse, Russ Morgan, Kay Kyser and Ish Kabibble, Harry James, Horace Heidt, Clyde McCoy, yes, and Glen Miller, Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, Ginny Simms and Harry Babbitt, Ted Weems, Les Brown and his band of renown, Ray Noble, Ray McKinley, Alec Templeton, Alvino Ray, Phil Spitalny and his all-girl orchestra, featuring Evelyn and her magic violin- all touring and all entertaining for less than a buck along with a movie.

Sometimes I would go knowing I might not enjoy the movie, but outside the theater was a big sign that said “Air cooled”, and in July and August that meant a couple of hours of real comfort.

There was no such thing as “Access Hollywood” or other shows that exposed the foibles of stars. I sold “Liberty” and “Radio Mirror” and Bennarr McFadden’s “Physical Culture” magazines for spending money.

James Stewart and June Allyson starred in the 1954 "Glenn Miller Story."

I read Hedda Hopper and Louella Parsons and their sanitized columns about who was dating whom.

There was no overt mention of adultery or rehab, however, when Robert Mitchum got arrested for smoking pot and Ingrid Bergman  ran off with a film director, an Italian yet - it got censure and a lot of bad press whereas today kids out of wedlock or coming out of the closet means little or nothing.

My memories of those Glen Miller times reminded me that I saw those personalities depicted in the movie in person- Louis Armstrong, Gene Krupa, Benny Goodman.

When I got to Northwestern, my roommate introduced me to Stan Kenton’s music and June Christie and Peggy Lee, and Red Norvo and Louis Bellson.

I got introduced to Art Tatum and George Shearing and Zoot Sims and Wingy Manone and Louis Prima on Howard Street, and met Mel Torme, the Velvet Fog; and Buddy Rich and Terry Gibbs and Lionel Hampton and Dave Brubeck and Nat King Cole when he had his trio on Rush Street.

When I worked at WKBQ in Chicago, there were the Harmonicats (“Peg o’ My Heart”) and Boris Minevitch and the Harmonica Rascals (featuring Johnny Puleo).

This was all live, no IPhones or DVDs or CDs.

We wore out 78 rpm shellac records and rushed to get the first LPs which we played on the cheapest LP player we could find, often one we could plug into our radio which served as speaker.

These are memories which still exist, even as the names have long faded from public notice.

As long as my memories live, they live, too.

Werner Haas is a West Hollywood writer whose latest novel is named "Wasps." Summary: Long Island is no longer a place for complacent suburbanites. It is now a festering ground for anti-social activity by bored or power-hungry teens.

The Wasps is a story of such a neo-Nazi gang made up of otherwise "ordinary" middle-class young people.
