Sundown on Sunset: Pride fest entertainment retrospective
07/02/2012
Music by Sean Patrick, West Hollywood, California

Los Angeles and West Hollywood have their share of street festivals.  The best of them celebrate community and neighborhoods coming together.  Each occasion has its own character.

West Hollywood’s Pride celebration, Christopher Street West, like all Pride festivals, began as a monumental act of bravery and passion for individual rights.  The parade and the festival have always been a beacon for freedom of expression.

Somewhere along the way, I’m sure it’s hard for any street fair to balance the message with the need to cover expenses, and attract enough people to come back again.

On any given weekend in the summer around here you will have no trouble finding toe rings, henna tattoos, and a cell phone company that wants your business.   After so many festivals through so many years, even Pride after Pride, it can all become just another row of booths.

CSW had a huge advantage this year with the gleaming new ‘Red’ building at the Design Center, and the new library standing with its shoulders erect, wearing its murals like the hottest summer fashion.  The festival was in fact new again for many of us.

There never seemed to be a lull in the crowd from Saturday afternoon until Sunday night.  This time there was a nicer flow to the booths, and a more user friendly system of portable toilets, almost hidden away around the campus.  I’ll forgive them the fact that the only hand washing station I saw had no water on Saturday afternoon.

It felt to me that the size of the crowd was up this year compared to last year, but there’s a chance the new layout kept people circulating more.  The club atmosphere in the parking garage had a bit of a rave feel, even if more structured, and DJ after DJ kept the bodies flowing.

On the main stage, hosts Asha and Billy Francesca were a hoot.  They kept us laughing mostly, and rolling our eyes.  Belinda Carlisle was a perfect fit for a headlining act, especially for a crowd that is finally showing more gray hair and a few, very few, lines on their faces.

‘Gay people who are out and over 40’ is finally a major demographic.  The movement early on tragically lost a lot of its freedom fighters to AIDS, more than it should have, and the generation right behind has grown up.  Gray is now a rainbow color.

Tan has always been a rainbow color, and the planners this year came up with their best idea in years.  Who knew that dance music lovers might want to take a dip in a pool between main-stage acts on a hot summer day?

Real four foot deep swimming pools and two semi-monstrous inflated water slides at “Summer Tramp” enticed more than a few to take a quick dip.  They had created their own pool party, huge beach balls and all, and it was a blast.  There is nothing like eye candy at a Pride festival.

The music was as diverse as the crowd, but unfortunately for me, so many sound systems were competing for the ten seconds it took you to walk by that it became the most ear buzzing festival yet.

It’s not age telling me to bring ear plugs next year, but let’s be honest.  Once you’re near the main stage, the sound needs to be loud not only to hear it, but because that’s what makes you dance.

Upright Cabaret proved once again that mixing and matching stars and songs with a great backup band has something for everyone.

Chris Issacson brings you in with a genuine smile and energy and then leaves it up to the players to bring it up a notch.  Yvette Cason had fun with the crowd and gave it back with her amazing voice.   Jake Simpson sang an original tune and his smile and personality were a great fit for the day.

On Sunday, Dario Benitez got the party started with his sexy, yet boy next door Latin charm.  He had some of the better dancers of the festival, and he sang to us in the language of sex and love, which that day happened to be Spanish.

Over all, it was nice to feel that CSW didn’t rely on the new buildings to carry the atmosphere, but they added a few gems and an approach that gave the crowd more time to enjoy the fun rather than wait in bottle neck after bottle neck.

The art of attracting the freshest music and talent that has meaning to the GLBT community in all its facets took an uptick this year, and West Hollywood proved that it knows how to host a party.
