Suppose you’re a tourist visiting world-famous destinations- the London Tower, the Sistine Chapel, the remnants of the Berlin Wall, Machu Picchu- but to get to them you have to pass some sleazy sex shops or red-light districts with tired whores staring at you as you pass by.
Not likely, of course, but in a way that’s what we have in WeHo.
Nice restaurants, fine hotels, good shopping.
And then stands the Studs Theatre like a beacon of detritus in the middle of our little rainbow village.
A few years ago I called on the Studs Theater management to re-build the place, making it into a revival house.
It was once the Monica Theater, and showed great G movies beginning over 70-years ago.
Of late the theater, now called Studs Theater, shows adult, mostly gay-themed. pornographic films.
I floated the civic suggestion of saving it as an art theatre to take it out from under the perverts and creeps who patronize it, fumigate the place, put in some decent equipment and reopen it in its original 1940's-era movie house splendor to show Indy, foreign and classic films.
I since gave up, and a couple weeks ago I strongly suggested tearing down the local “icon” Studs Theater.
I can understand the needs of some of its patrons, but, I suggest those needs should be satisfied somewhere else.
This “theatre” reminds society of the sex-obsessed “queers” right-wingers protest about.
This location does nothing to enhance either gay pride of gay accomplishments.
It is merely a source of revenue for fumblers in the dark. I am not opposed to those wanting to make a buck off the sleazy of our society.
I would prefer it be done somewhere else- downtown LA, Santa Monica, Manhattan Beach, Valley Village.
I think it’s time for someone with deep pocket development money to buy the Studs and renovate it into a living symbol of GLBT accomplishments over the years- a GLBT Hall of Fame, art exhibits, concerts, theatrical events, lectures book-signings, etc., etc.
It’s time for WeHo to become more than a “Boys Town” or home to Gay Pride weekend or Halloween extravaganzas.
I say, let’s turn the “Studs” into a celebratory location instead of one with an audience of the depraved seeking their own kind.
I still say, tear down the Studs “Theatre” and build that Hall of Fame for all tourists the world over to visit and admire.

Werner Haas is a West Hollywood writer whose latest novel is named "Wasps." | Summary: Long Island is no longer a place for complacent suburbanites. It is now a festering ground for anti-social activity by bored or power-hungry teens.
The Wasps is a story of such a neo-Nazi gang made up of otherwise "ordinary" middle-class young people.
