There will be phone calls, family gatherings, barbeques, ties and other gifts to “celebrate” Father’s Day, a reaction to the merchandising gimmick of Mother’s Day.
But, let me bring in a minority report. I feel there are some fathers who do not deserve attention or gifts or special honors.
They are the Bible-toting, unflinching bigots who have thrown out their sons and daughters for being gay.
For every homeless teen or victim oif predators in the LA area alone, there is a stub born father who refuses to acknowledge that being gay is not a psychotic misadventure or a sin, but merely a way of life over which some young people have no control or necessarily a choice.
These men are the evil in our society, the menace to the ability to become an adult even if gay, or Lesbian or transgender.
These men are the monsters. They do not deserve recognition on Father’s Day because their attitudes are anything but paternal.
There are too many of them in our society. And no amount of Gay Pride parades or weekends or media attention will sway them from their belief that they have spawned undesirables and the only way to deal with this dilemma (in their minds) is to toss them out, to ignore and forget them and to believe they never existed.
These modern-day Torquemadas may sit in their churches forever, for all I care. They cannot erase the humiliation their stubbornness and hatred of anything and everything gay causes their own offspring.
So, rather than celebrate Father’s Day that includes these narrow-minded right-wingers, let me make a Father’s Day suggestion locally. Regardless of age, be a Father, a kind spirit to some forgotten youngster.
Prove to them (and maybe yourself) that there are people who will not prey on their naiveté, or use them as merchandise.
Prove that they are not worthless, but deserve a little attention and harmless affection, maybe a good meal or a movie or some time at the beach.
And, a memo to our City Council who were patting themselves on the back riding in convertibles down Santa Monica Blvd this past Sunday- why not join forces with GLBT organizations to put on a Sunday barbeque with music and entertainment to make the forgotten, overlooked and father-less feel respected and loved for at least this one day.
