What a difference a couple acres can make.

The CSW LA Gay Pride 2012 festival and parade spread out on the new grounds of the West Hollywood Park this year, and reaction was universally, well, celebratory.
The new and improved festival grounds inaugurated the WeHo Park expansion from less than two to nearly five acres in greenspace.

With a finished library and a new addition to the Pacific Design Center campus – the RedBuilding – as dramatic backdrops, the atmosphere was truly urban but park-like.
Even old Pride hands pinched themselves.
Valerie Wagner, a longtime CSW board member, caught on one of the festival’s Segways, told WeHo News that, “We don’t have the water, but we do have the PDC and the library as backdrops.”
Director of Communications Sam Borelli said, “this expansion lets us spread out a little bit… it gives us breathing room after three long years of construction.”
He pointed out that the new grounds puts WeHo on par with “Long Beach Pride, [which] has one of the real estates… but it’s working out for us this year and absolutely helps us compete with them.”

He pointed out that the community stages could be better spaced and, as a consequence, “noises don’t compete.”
Importantly, he said, “We had eight youth organizations come together to give us feedback,” which resulted in a youth center in a corner all its own, “representing CSW’s commitment that youth have a voice at the table.”
Lucy and Sarah, from West Hollywood and Los Angeles respectively, sad they had attended “at least seven or eight Prides,” and found the new grounds “beautiful and really cool.”
Adrian, another Wehoan who has been to “at least 20 years,” worth of Pride festivals, thought the expansive space encouraged young people to gather and show that “gay people are just people; we like to have fun just like other people.”
He said, “Hats off to the City and the County for making possible the library that allowed the grounds to be here – it’s like a pavilion.”

The expansiveness of the grounds offered CSW a chance to even premier a water park, complete with waters slides – that’s right, water slides plural.
One of the huge plastics water slides was a sinking-Titanic the other a pyramid-shaped slide with a bouncy house below.
And those did not count the two inflatable wading pools filled with water, play toys and very hot men and women.
The LA Pride Parade, normally a large event attracting hundreds of thousands of people, drew even more folks than in recent memory; for the first time in ten years the parade route sidewalk was nearly impassable on both sides for the entire length from Crescent Heights to San Vicente.
Council member John Duran kicked off the parade with his familiar introduction, “From West Hollywood, where the women are strong and the men are pretty,” and the Dykes on Bikes brigade noisily revved their engines and proceeded past the Red Carpet leaving behind smiles, cheers and exhaust fumes.
In another first, a US Congress member, Representative Adam Schiff, rode in the parade, something longtime area Congress member Henry Waxman never did.
Seated in a car with the current WeHo Mayor Jeffrey Prang and his husband Ray Vizcarra, the current congress member for the 29th District (D-Pasadena) is running for congress in the newly-drawn 28th, which now includes West Hollywood.
In an exclusive interview after the parade, Rep. Schiff told WeHo News, “This was my first at this Pride festival and I’m having a great time.”

He recollected his first appearance in town, at the Library dedication in October, 2011, when LA County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky introduced him to the crowd.
"He said some nice things about me and I said… ‘calling someone a great member of Congress these days, well, let’s say it’s a pretty low bar.
"If you’re not sending out naked pictures of yourself on Twitter you’re considered well above average.”
He got his real introduction to West Hollywood when, as he recalled, “Mayor Duran got up after that and said, “Congressman, I’ll have you know that here in West Hollywood sending out naked pictures of yourself on Twitter – that’s considered pretty standard operating procedure. That’s when I [realized] just what a fun town West Hollywood is.”
For him, the CSW LA Gay Pride Parade and festival put the exclamation point on that thought.
For hundreds of thousands of others, West Hollywood's LA Gay Pride showed the Creative City to be Party Central beyond reproach.
