The fight for second place in the Assembly District in which West Hollywood lies as part of redistricting grew tighter this week after the LA County Clerk released updated voting numbers.
Brad Torgan, a West Hollywood Republican, has gained third place in the voting for Assembly District 50.
In something of a surprise to some observers, Democratic candidate Torie Osborn, who had held the third-place position on Wednesday, fell back to fourth place on Friday.
Brad Torgan, a Republican from West Hollywood, was lifted into third place when Los Angeles County elections officials processed 4,452 ballots Friday that were cast in the new district but not recorded.
First place finisher Assembly member Betsy Butler retained her lead over second place finisher Santa Monica Mayor Richard Bloom.
Vote-by-mail, provisional and write-in ballots get tallied up to 28 days following the election.
The top two finishers, regardless of party affiliation, will advance to the Nov. 6 general election.
Ms. Osborn went from a 14 vote lead over Mr. Torgan to a 21 vote deficit.
Alan Hoffenblum, a West Hollywood resident and veteran political watcher and publisher of the nonpartisan California Target Book, told WeHo News that Mr. Torgan did much to hurt Ms. Osborn by sending a mailer directed at Democratic apartment dwellers in West Hollywood and Santa Monica that warned of rent increases if Ms. Osborn's Prop 13 revamp took hold.
She campaigned on increasing commercial real estate property taxes.
Despite the bad news, Ms. Osborn remained upbeat. On Friday morning her campaign sent out an E mail encouraging her endorsers not to jump ship before the final tally.
The E mail read, in part, “It ain’t over till it’s over… there are 13,500 uncounted votes, absentee and provisional votes turned in late. The election is not certified, and, until it is, I ask my supporters not to jump on other candidate bandwagons.
“There is a possibility that, given the majority of these ballots were from last minute voting, my margin of 673 could be made up. I would say it is not highly probable, but such things do happen -- think Kamala Harris!”
The next official update is scheduled for 1 p.m. Tuesday.
Mayor Bloom, sure of his lead, told WeHo News, “I look forward to the general election.”
