As I stepped out into one of my least favorite intersections, Melrose and San Vicente, a large black SUV screeched to a stop – but not before nudging me on my left leg with its fender.

There was no damage, simply put me off balance a bit.
What caused my blood pressure to increase, however, was a female voice yelling “watch where you’re going!”
Well, being a good citizen of West Hollywood, I hastened to the open driver side window to offer my apologies - which were accepted with a gracious wave of her middle finger.
Cars rule, I mused as I wobbled on my way to exercise my hard won franchise to vote.
Crossing this intersection is not for the faint of heart.
The walk signal begins to blink after the third step and barely allows enough time for one like me, with shuffling gate and a cane.
Further, the pavement is broken by patches and upheavals and cracks large enough to snare a heel or a cane tip.
A veritable obstacle course for the unwary and those who are not sprinters.
Gaining the other side is akin to climbing Mt. Wilson.
Yet, here is another hindrance to pedestrian navigation: the ever-lasting construction site reputedly belonging to Aga John.
Here the sidewalk bears scars of all manner of vehicles which have come and gone across what used to be the sidewalk.
One must carefully pick his way forward here. Past the outpouring of the underground stream, thankfully covered now (where does it flow?), and across the slopes of the alley exit.
Breathless with exertion and anticipation to the end of my simple journey, I pass the reclining figure of a homeless (?) person asleep on the grand library staircase and finally up the steps to the WeHo Auditorium to cast my vote into the boiling pot of political hoo-hah, like most, hoping for the best outcome.
On the return trip, I had to notice the immense white gates at the bottom of the auditorium steps.
It apparently leads into the lark but ire minded me of an elephant enclosure. Are we keeping people in or out?
I cannot imagine why such an enclosure. But – that was only a detour.

I took my time to really examine what was under my feet as I headed home.
The block between Melrose and Rangley (west side) has been in constant flux since I can remember.
The sidewalk along that stretch is a cement patchwork, uneven and crumbling. The weed-strewn exterior has never been an inviting aspect. Perhaps the new tenant, a maker of tequila, will brighten it up.
The next block, to Dorrington, is not much better. Finally, a residential two-story structure is nearly finished and perhaps the walk will be renovated – as well as the covers to two utility vaults.
Then, the building at 511 San Vicente, once known as the House of Pain/Pleasure, or The Chateau, seems to be exhibiting signs of regeneration as a residential complex.
But, as a sign of the times – we knew it wouldn’t take too long – a request to the city for a code variance to allow two cars to park on what is now – actually, what used to be a lawn.
When it was spray-painted green we had some hopes for the place. (Can you imagine how desperate we neighbors had become?)

The final leg of my journey was over asphalt patches on tilted cement slabs of often excessively narrow sidewalks. Perhaps that’s alright since we don’t see an awful lot of pedestrians on our street.
My examinations of walking conditions in West Hollywood is rather limited, since my walking ability is rather limited.
However, my survey shows many, may yards of bad sidewalks and, in some cases, near commercial activities, dirty and simply uncared for.
One takes greater risks than he should to cross many intersections, or even crosswalks. Years ago in discussing crosswalks with the city I was told that its reluctance to establish and control them was because “crosswalks are where people are killed.”
Is that a reason to not establish them? Forget the state manuals when it comes to street and sidewalk safety.
Common sense and a true examination of local circumstances is a better criteria for crosswalks, bike lanes, sidewalk width, traffic light timing, etc.
How about having a geezer like me be timed crossing Santa Monica or Melrose or Robertson – or the other in central and East West Hollywood streets with which I not familiar? I offer myself for that project.
I have been told that I am always complaining. But, listen carefully. It is not whining nor screaming for attention. My words are intended for those who might do something to correct or alter what I note.
The only thing I really complain about these days is when my Jim Beam bottle is empty – thanks to one of my boys!
