Lisa Debbie Adams, a 36-year-old West Hollywood psychic who claimed to be exorcizing a curse from an Irvine woman, pleaded guilty last week to stealing about $200,000 from the woman.
Lisa Debbie Adams, a West Hollywood woman, pleaded guilty to posing as a psychic and conning an Irvine woman.
Ms. Adams, was original charged with 32 felony counts of commercial burglary for having bilked the woman between July 2008 and August 2009, as she compelled her victim to open several charge cards and make many large purchases to pay for her efforts.
She cut a plea deal Thursday in which she admitted to grand theft with a sentencing enhancement for white collar crime exceeding $100,000.
In exchange for her plea, she will avoid jail – so long as she repays all the money she stole.
The Irvine wman got her introduction to Ms. Adams while on a day trip to WeHo.
The so-called psychic was passing out fliers offering her services in West Hollywood in June 2008 when she apparently spotted the Irvine woman holding a different psychic's advertisement.
After Ms. Adams identified herself as a psychic, she warned the woman of a "darkness" around her and advised her to make an appointment for a "cleansing."
Soon Ms. Adams discovered the woman had $100,000 in an individual retirement account, and she hastened to set up several meetings between June 2008 and August 2009 in the her own West Hollywood apartment and her client's Irvine workplace.
Ms. Adams had the woman withdraw various amounts of money - as much as $96,000 at one time - in order to "cleanse" her of the curse and "evil."
When the woman told the psychic that she no longer needed her services, Ms. Adams told her the curse would befall on the woman's family if “treatments” were to stop.
Out of fear, the customer continued drawing cash out of her accounts for Adams, who also instructed the woman to buy $30,000 in gold bars as a "shield" for protection against the demons and open several credit card accounts to purchase more than $100,000 in luxury gifts - including clothing, furniture, electronics, accessories, and jewelry.
The client finally reported the con to Irvine Police in August 2009, resulting in Ms. Adam’s arrest in April, 2011 and the charges .
Because Ms. Adams had repaid the woman $50,000 before being charged, and the fact that she repaid another $70,000 before Thursday's court hearing, the judge treated her with leniency.
She must pay $30,000 every six months until she has paid off the $128,000 balance.
If the payments are made on time, Adams will likely be sentenced to probation and community service, so watch out for a psychic promising to heal your curse for “only” $30,000.
