WeHo Assembly race a squeaker
06/06/2012
By WeHo News staff, West Hollywood, California

For political junkies, it gets no better than this.

The hotly contested race for the two places on November’s General Election ballot ended in a nearly dead heat, with fewer than 800 votes separating the fourth and first place finishers.

The top voter getters, and the pair who will face off against one another in the General Election for the seat, were the officeholders, incumbent Assembly member Betsy Butler and Santa Monica Mayor Richard Bloom.

The two gay candidates in the race, political/social activist Torie Osborn placed a close third and, just 14 votes behind her, West Hollywood Historic Preservation Commissioner Brad Torgan, the only Republican in the race, finished fourth.

Incumbent Betsy Butler won the first California "jungle primary" Tuesday, setting the stage for a run-off with Santa Monica Mayor Richard Bloom.

The race was punctuated by a series of hardball mailers sent by third-place finisher Osborn against Ms. Butler, who kept to the high road.

She defended herself by issuing statements of support from the very popular Governor, Jerry Brown, and a larger war chest with which to send out positive mailings.

Her telephone electioneering also outweighed any efforts by other candidates.

Mayor Bloom’s campaign raised and spent far less than the Osborn and Butler campaigns, but he dominated in the populace Santa Monica electorate on name recognition.

Brad Torgan, the lone Republican on the campaign, surprised most of the political observers, but GOP consultant and WeHo resident Allan Hoffenblum said, “[Mr.] Bloom should give Brad [Torgan] kudos for his mailers. He sent one out to Santa Monica and WeHo Democratic registered apartment dwellers that claimed [Ms.] Osborn’s stance on Prop 13 would increase their rents.”

Santa Monic Mayor Richard Bloom iwll appear on November's ballot as candidate for the newly-created Assembly District 50.

He said that the mailer might not have swung many votes his way, but probably swung Democratic voters from Ms. Osborn’s camp into Mr. Bloom’s or Ms. Butler’s.

Several months ago Mr. Hoffenblum called a near-tie in the election, saying at the time that Mr. Torgan might even have a chance at gaining a run-off position based on GOP turnout if Democratic votes split evenly.

“It turns out Brad did better than I thought, deep down,” he told WeHo News. “He was able to raise $50,000 and get two mailers out – it’s always better if you can talk to the voters.”

He observed that Ms. Osborn’s mailers seemed more numerous than substantive, saying, “My Democratic friends in the district - and believe me, if I didn’t have Democratic friends, I’d have no friends -  all remarked on how many mailers [Ms. Osborn] sent, not on what she said in them.

“To me, her campaign seemed shrill.”

Ms. Osborn issued a statement to her supporters congratulating them on an “insurgent campaign that was vibrant, grassroots, people-powered… [but that] wasn't enough to overcome a determined and aggressive Sacramento machine -- and a praiseworthy surge by my Santa Monica Mayor.”

The other candidate did not reply to requests for comment before publication time.
