West Hollywood City Hall was the sight of a four story water spout after a fire hydrant lost its moorings Saturday afternoon.
The hydrant caught the brunt of a furniture delivery truck that sheared it off at 3:20 pm while diners watched from the nearby restaurants.
Passersby were treated to a free shower, while some ran under the spray to cool off on a hot urban afternoon – at least until a fire crew came by to shut the water spout down.
Brian Clopp told WeHo News, "I was on my way to the post office when I was wondering why cars had a river of water gushing up to their hoods.
"Then I saw this big geyser with people running through it, laughing and playing.
"I thought maybe they opened up the hydrant for people to play, like they do back in NYC.
"Then I saw the yellow hydrant in the bushes about ten feet away, and the skidmarks on the curb told the story of how it came to be there.
"Clearly, a little old lady ran over it with her walker. And then the fun began in West Hollywood."
Folks with video cameras doffed shoes to get in close while the fire crew capped the hydrant.
Well over 100 people stepped away from meals, came out of living rooms or shops or paused on their walking errands to watch the display.
The driver of the truck was uninjured, except for his pocketbook.
The spout came under control inside a few minutes, inconveniencing traffic, shop keeps and restaurateurs for only 20 minutes.
Dogs were seen walking away muttering under their breath about unfair treatment, while birds jostled for position in the newly created brook that ran down Sweetzer Avenue to the sea.
