Throughout my life, at home, in school, in the military, I heard the oft-repeated reminder that “many people have sacrificed and died for your right to vote.”

While that is true, I find that many of my fellow citizens seem to be too busy or disinterested to get up and get to the polling place.
It often seems that those afore mentioned sacrifices were in vain. What will be the percentage of registered voters at the polls this year? The count will be a measure of how strongly people feel about our very democracy.
This year it especially important to vote – in the primary, of course, for practice for the big one in November. But, we have our contentious local event to consider, as well.
Like you I have received a broadside of political ads in the mail. I have the LA Times endorsements and notes from several political groups to consider – and I shall.
I am personally concerned this year with a candidate who bought endorsements in Democratic clubs by sending in new members to vote for her – and they will never be seen again, I’m told.
Shades of Southie! This is like the old days in Boston when Governor Curley presided from a federal prison and a local pol was known as “the Mahatma.”
That sort of nonsense might have one been overlooked as business as usual. Not today. We should have grown past that sort of skullduggery.
Then come the ads of a toothy, smiling woman asserting that the world will be a much better place when she is representing us (?) in Sacramento. Come on!
Here’s what happens when a Democratic club endorses a candidate. Also, when other Democratic clubs endorse a candidate.
Politicians who never heard of the candidate will get in line to add their endorsements, simply to follow the party line – even when the candidate I s an interloper. Then come the photos as everybody embraces like long lost siblings.
The game is on.
My vote is for Betsy Butler. She has demonstrated her ability to survive in a House which is full of recalcitrant republicans. She has made allies on both sides of the aisle during her tenure.
She is trusted and owes her allegiance to her constituents not to some anonymous moneybags.
She is also endorsed by several of our City Council who know how she works. And, she is known for her good works throughout the district.
Re “term limits” – never a good idea when people exercise their franchise to control who is in office. Lazy folk love term limits.
To date thirteen states are actively removing senior, students, the ill in nursing homes and the poor, usually minority members by restricting who will be able to vote in November.
We must work now to void as many of the effects of those onerous laws. Is this the USA or is it some third world country?
Let’s be true Americans by getting to the polls on Tuesday, June 5.
