Betsy Butler sat down with WeHo News to answer questions about her run for the new Assembly seat, AD 50, which encompasses West Hollywood, Santa Monica, Malibu, Los Angeles’ Brentwood, Bel Air, Carthay Square, much of Hollywood, Hancock Park, Miracle Mile, as well as Beverly Hills, Pacific Palisades, Topanga, part of the Santa Monica Mountains and Agoura Hills.
Tuesday’s primary election, in which the two top vote getters will move on to the November general election for the seat, pits this candidate against three others.
WeHo News: What drives you to legislate?
Betsy Butler: I started when I was in college and I had a professor who said I should be in politics, but I came from a political family but I didn’t know that.
My father was a huge Republican, a Lt. Colonel in the Air Force Reserves and a banker and my mom worked for the California Teachers Association, so she was union, so every dinner table conversation was, “how people disagree, who was going to vote where,” and so I was just raised in a family where you always vote, where you never miss an election.
You have to be part of the community and you have to give back. You have to be very thankful for what you have because not everybody is as lucky as you.
So when I got to college I had a professor say, “You should be in politics because you just get this stuff,” so I interned for State Assembly member Lucy Killea, and then I interned for Alan Cranston in 1984 when he was running for President and then I returned to intern for Leo McCarthy and worked for him for five years.
Then Bill Clinton came calling, and I was his finance director [during the campaign], then went to the Clinton administration and served in the Department of Commerce doing international trade policy.

I also sat on the board of Equality California for five years and served as President of the National Women's Political Caucus (LA Westside Chapter), and as the Director of Development for Consumer Attorneys of California.
So it’s always been about advocacy for justice, equality and that kind of thing.
I put my head down, do the work and am confident that, because I’m just here to get things done, I’ll be successful. That’s always been my plan and it’s worked for me so far.
WeHo News: Help us understand what you see as West Hollywood’s values and how would you represent those if you go to Sacramento?
Betsy Butler: West Hollywood is ahead of its time. [Now, as with West Hollywood] the young people don’t see color, they don’t see sexual orientation as much – they just really don’t care. I’m firmly behind a woman’s right to choose and to go backwards would be an expensive, rather ignorant step.
I believe the gay community has big concerns with meth use and drug addiction, but I also know that we’re helping the youth community come out and be safe if their family is not going to be accepting of their orientation.
I know there’s a lot of immigrant communities involved in the dialogue here in West Hollywood, and again that’s another conversation on the Assembly floor that’s horrifying, around the DREAM Act, but it’s what we need to do.
I was at a coffee in Lomita and got a lot of flak from people who said that it was taking away from their kids, and it’s just not, it’s not.
WeHo News: What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned in this race?
Betsy Butler: This campaign has reaffirmed my commitment to public service and the importance of being able to advocate for those who do not have a voice. My priorities remain our elders, our veterans, the environment and green job training and creation, education and health care.
It has been a privilege to serve in the Assembly and fight for our working families and the most vulnerable among us. California is a vibrant state and I hope I have the opportunity to continue to champion issues that will ensure our leadership on vital matters across the country and around the world.
