The GOP vice-presidential nominee, Paul Ryan, told so many fibs his fibula coverings ought to have caught fire.

Exclusive: AD 50 candidate interview with Torie Osborn
05/31/2012
By WeHo News staff, West Hollywood, California

Progressive organizer Torie Osborn sat with WeHo News to talk about his campaign for the newly-created 50th Assembly district. The primary is Tuesday, June 5, 2012 and, unlike in previous Assemby primaries, the top two finishers regardless of party will face off in the November general election.

Torie Osborn sat down with WeHo News to answer questions about her run for the new Assembly seat, AD 50, which encompasses West Hollywood, Santa Monica, Malibu, Los Angeles’ Brentwood, Bel Air, Carthay Square, much of Hollywood, Hancock Park, Miracle Mile, as well as Beverly Hills, Pacific Palisades, Topanga, part of the Santa Monica Mountains and Agoura Hills.

Tuesday’s primary election, in which the two top vote getters will move on to the November general election for the seat, pits this candidate against three others.

WeHo News: What drives you to legislate?

Torie Osborn: The short answer is that three generations of my family have benefitted from the California dream and it’s careening off the cliff.

I feel like I have spent my life forging change and helping people move through crisis, either communities or individuals. I feel called to do my little piece to help move California move through this crisis and try to turn things around.

The two step process that got me here… [began] after I left Liberty Hill… Mayor [Villaraigosa] asked me to serve in his cabinet. For two-and-a-half years it was heartbreaking to live day in and day out in the shell of government left by 30 years of “starve the beast” right wing fiscal policies, where brutal decisions had to be made daily: do we cut librarians or firefighters?

I got passionate about tax and governance reform and that led me to the work that I’m doing now, building a voter base for eliminating the corporate loophole in Prop 13.

In the course of my City Hall years, I saw effective people and ineffective people who are elected officials. I realized I could be one of the effective ones.

The second thing was I took a leave for three months to work for President Obama’s election, working as a “super volunteer,” a 24-hour worker bee.

I worked with lots of young folks, and one day one young woman said to me: “OK, let me get this straight. You have spent 40 years successfully advocating for social justice but you’ve never run for office? Why not? We need you inside too!

I’m most interested in the state level issues like education and economic opportunity.

WeHo News: Help us understand what you see as West Hollywood’s values and how would you represent those if you go to Sacramento?

Torie Osborn: It feels as if West Hollywood has been a successful experiment in a small city with a big heart with a dynamic economic engine.

West Hollywood creates a safe space for diverse people to work, live and play while respecting each other.  That’s a match for my values!

And it’s similar to Santa Monica.  Also, there’s a creative, edgy urban mix,   that the LGBT community has “owned,” has created at the center of defining the culture of West Hollywood -- while always being respectful of the Russian community [and] other communities in a very adult way.

WeHo News: What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned in this race?

Torie Osborn: How many policy answers are out there -- how many creative answers already exist to our problems . The problem is that our governance and fiscal systems are broken – our priorities are upside down, so those solutions cannot currently break through and be scaled up.

I’ve met with venture capital guys who explain to me that 50 percent of our bond money hasn’t been expended. We have money sitting up there that could be turned into desperately needed jobs or infrastructure.

There are really cool things that could be done with all the federal billions coming in for transportation – we could remake green manufacturing – why don’t we make those cars here in LA?

I just believe the talent exists to solve [these problems], and I intend to be there to listen and connect them.  It’s what I’ve done my whole life – whether on women’s health, HIV/AIDS, LGBT rights or fighting poverty.
