Richard Bloom sat down with WeHo News to answer questions about his run for the new Assembly seat, AD 50, which encompasses West Hollywood, Santa Monica, Malibu, Los Angeles’ Brentwood, Bel Air, Carthay Square, much of Hollywood, Hancock Park, Miracle Mile, as well as Beverly Hills, Pacific Palisades, Topanga, part of the Santa Monica Mountains and Agoura Hills.
Tuesday’s primary election, in which the two top vote getters will move on to the November general election for the seat, pits this candidate against three others.
WeHo News: What drives you to legislate?
Richard Bloom: Being a board member and then president of my local neighborhood group, people started saying, “You should run for city council.” I’ve always been interested in politics… and it sort of started to make sense after a while.
I love being on the city council and could stay there forever. I love getting things done, taking care of constituent concerns and solving their problems and I like being able to lead policy in a very functional political environment.
What I see as the challenge in Sacramento is that it’s just the opposite, a very dysfunctional environment, and I like to think that I can bring some of the skills rooted in my background as an attorney and innate personal skills to bear to create some real change and a new dynamic.
WeHo News: Help us understand what you see as West Hollywood’s values and how would you represent those if you go to Sacramento?
Richard Bloom: Every community has its own set of value; but let me back up a little bit here. I lived in West Hollywood for about three years before and after I got married. I have, as pat of my responsibilities on city council I’m representative to the Westside Council of Governments and West Hollywood is part of the COG.
So, in a sense I’ve been working on West Hollywood and the issues that we share and have in common.
I’ve lived in this area for 45 years, so I feel I know this area very well.
Santa Monica and West Hollywood are in many ways very similar; they’re very strong undercurrent of progressive Democrat policy. I think we believe very strongly in social justice, and then again, West Hollywood is also a city that believes in affordable housing and making sure that there’s a strong social safety net, as does Santa Monica.
But it’s also a city with its own flavor and own vibe. It was founded far more reently than Santa Monica and so it’s still growing and the community is very vibrant and tight knit. That’s partially a factor of its being a young city in its formative years but it’s also a place where there’s so much public participation – e get that in Santa Monica, too. That’s a sign of a very functional government and, in my view, something that Sacramento is lacking.
I’d like to bring more of that… better dialogue between constituents and legislators. I think one of the ways we do that is the traditional means – more community meetings – but also by leveraging technology to facilitate communication and a sense of what people are concerned about.
WeHo News: What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned in this race?
Richard Bloom: The campaign has overtaken my life to a greater extent than I thought it would. So far, though, there haven’t been a lot of surprises. The Democratic Clubs was, to me, predictable, and the fundraising, for me, has been a challenge.
This is an interesting race, in that although we visit one another and shop and dine in each other’s restaurants and stores, we’ve just been thrown together by a state redistricting process that – they didn’t come to us to ask, they just said, “you’re all together.” In some ways the district hangs together, but many people don’t know the district exists yet.
I like to think of it all as a big neighborhood… made up of a diverse group of neighborhoods and cities... My job will be to knit together what the district’s needs and wants are and communicate that in Sacramento.
I think overall voters are looking for greater transparency and openness and fewer games. In my campaign, that’s what I’m focused on – speaking as closely and directly to voters as possible.
