Katahn Khaimov's alleged killer was arrested one year ago and arraigned last week for his murder.
A killing that galvanized a neighborhood and remained unsolved for years was apparently solved last year, although police did not tell the public.
In March of 2008, a West Hollywood man named Katan Khaimov went out for his evening walk near Poinsettia Park, but did not return home.
Rather, he lay in the shrubs dying after a knife wound left him bleeding as he called out for help.
The neighbors ignored his pleas, thinking him a vagrant or drunk.
He was not robbed and police would not speculate on the motive for his slaying.
The neighboring community rose up to form the Melrose Action Network in response, gathering in the hundreds within weeks of his death.
It took years, but LAPD made an arrest in the case in 2011, only notifying the public this month.
The suspect is identified as Angel Jesus Gonzalez, 30, a transient known to frequent Poinsettia Park Recreation Center.
Police apprehended Mr. Gonzalez in June 2011 and he has pleaded not guilty to one count of murder.

He was arraigned on Wednesday May 23.
Det. Paul Funicello, a lead investigator on the case, said that the delay in publicizing Mr. Gonzalez’s arrest came at the Khaimov family’s request.
“We didn’t make much fanfare about the arrest,” Det. Funicello said. “We had talked with the family and they didn’t want their privacy being impacted, so we were pretty discreet about it to protect the family and the investigation.”
According to detectives, they located Mr. Gonzalez in Phoenix, Arizona, where he was reportedly staying with friends.
They arrested him last June 27.
The detective described Gonzalez as a transient who lived in and around West Hollywood and the Melrose District, often frequenting Poinsettia Park.
Det. Funicello would not divulge any information about a motive or any other evidence linking Gonzalez to the murder, citing court proceedings.
The tragedy occurred during one of Mr. Khaimov regular evening walks to Plummer Park along Romaine Street and Martel Avenue, near where he and his kin resided.

Authorities believe he was stabbed around 9 pm, according to initial reports, but neighbors who heard his moans and calls for help failed to report his plight.
A citizen finally called the police around 11 pm, whereupon Mr. Khaimov was taken to the hospital, where he soon died from loss of blood.
Det. Wendy Berndt, at the time head of homicide detectives for the Hollywood Division, said at the time that the delay in the reporting of the incident contributed to his death.
Mr. Khaimov had immigrated to the United States from Kazakhstan and lived in the West Hollywood neighborhood with his family since 1995.
He was a family man who had been married for 48 years and had four children.
Mr. Gonzalez has a history of narcotics violations and stands charged with one charge of murder with special circumstances, using a knife.
He remains in custody at the Men’s Central Jail in lieu of $1 million bail.
