The Hudson threw its second block party to benefit the SOVA Food Bank, but the neighbors on the block had no fun.
A few days later, on Thursday, roughly 40 neighbors gathered to give the Hudson’s owners what for – apparently the party was quite a nuisance.
One neighbor, Shawn Flannigan, sent an E mail to the neighbors that complained about the traffic, parking and noise the gathering caused.
It read, in part, “How dare you Hudson, and the City of West Hollywood, be so inconsiderate and disrespectful of your neighbors! If you want to have another Music Festival, move it to The Hollywood Palladium or venues that have space/parking for 8,000 attendees!”
The Hudson’s owners were quick to apologize, citing last year’s party’s success and the fact they heard no complaints in its aftermath.
“I apologize for the disturbance,” Hudson co-owner Michael Jay said.
“We didn’t hear anything from the neighbors after last year’s party and I didn’t realize the impact on the neighborhood.”
Mayor Jeffrey Prang was on hand for the neighborhood meeting and admitted that the city had failed to take into account the impacts of a far larger party.
He said, “If anybody’s to blame, it’s the city. There are things we could have done that were better... from the city’s perspective, I apologize.”
The Hudson Block Party drew an estimated 6,500 people, according to the Hudson.
The space, on the Hudson, Bank of America and traffic curve at Crescent Heights and Santa Monica Boulevards saw 12 bands performing between 11 am and 11 pm.
The biggest complaint, besides the noise, was the patrons defecating and urinating on the neighbors’ property, despite the 16 portable toilets on the grounds.
The predominantly straight crowd also engaged in insults of the neighboring residents, disregarded traffic and crossed the busy intersection outside crosswalks and against traffic and drove away drunk.
One of the attendees, Luke Akao, allegedly died after attending the block party in a crash on his motorcycle, although WeHo News has been unable to substantiate whether or not he was driving under the influence at the time of his death.
According to the Hudson’s owners, they raised “in the low five figures” for SOVA.
