For some reason, whoever is in charge of American calendars finds a reason to “celebrate” various elements of society. February is Black history month, for example.
For some reason, we who have reached “seniority” are limited to one month’s recognition.
WeHo has a special luncheon, a health fair and somehow City Council recognition of the contribution of seniors to our community. But for those of us who do not seek attention to either our ages or our accomplishments, having a month is demeaning.
We live twelve months of the year. We are mostly ignored twelve months of the year. We find it harder and harder to pay rent, insurance, food and medical bills. But, June through April very few really give a damn.
As the life span of Americans increases (less than some other Western civilizations) getting old is no longer a miracle. For some of us it is an increasing frustration: Sheriffs tend to talk louder and slower, even if we have no hearing or comprehension problems.
Banks no longer see us as viable customers for the future. Gyms specialize in toning younger abs and pecs.
WeHo’s Senior Advisory Board, from which I was eliminated a year ago, functions as a figurehead of the large percentage of senior citizens living in WeHo.
However, I have nothing but praise for our Social Services personnel who really are among the few people in our little village who have compassion not limited to “Senior Month.”
One problem of aging is that we tune out those who insist on talking about the future. As for me, I don’t give a damn if Medicare goes bankrupt in 2040, or if China rules the world by 2050.
I care about ME not going bankrupt in 2012. I care about shyster lawyers trying to cone me out of hundreds of thousands of dollars. In other words, I want Senior Month to be a Senior YEAR.
I want those of us graying and with expanding waistlines or sagging breasts to be a little more egomaniacal. Me First is the motto by which I continue to life, and I hope, thieve, for more years to come.
So, four weeks is not enough to celebrate me. I want years!

Werner Haas is a West Hollywood writer whose latest novel is named "Wasps." | Summary: Long Island is no longer a place for complacent suburbanites. It is now a festering ground for anti-social activity by bored or power-hungry teens.
The Wasps is a story of such a neo-Nazi gang made up of otherwise "ordinary" middle-class young people.
